Some very exciting news: I made a 25 minute visual essay about director Nobuhiko Obayashi’s life and career with @bsoderberg.bsky.social and it’ll premiere this Sunday at the @mahoningdit.bsky.social’s upcoming screening of HOUSE!

No shade to any of the Vertigo relaunch writers, but this is what the lineup looks like with me no longer in it, lol.

One of the most beautiful and demure of its type, a reposeful haunted house mystery sculpted with confident bleeding-heart compassion for both the living and the dead. Long before the phantasm violence kicks into tremendously classy stuff, you fall in love with the movie’s humanity and humility.

As far as I know, this was the first copy of HOUSE you could rent in the US. It’s a bootleg of one of the two Japanese Laserdisc releases.

RIP actor & Chicago native Ron Dean.

He interrogated Dr. Richard Kimble in THE FUGITIVE, he dropped Andy off at detention in THE BREAKFAST CLUB, he was shot by Harvey Dent in THE DARK KNIGHT, he was Marty Crane's poker buddy on FRASIER, and so much more.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

I feel like the GOP didn’t count on six months of layoffs and the dangling threat of getting fired softening the blow of a shutdown. Harder to use an operating federal government as leverage when some random Trump flunky can decide to fuck up your life on a whim.

My kid's school had put up a wishlist. This isn't a rich area, lots of families here rely on WIC and jobs at the Navy shipyard, which means the government shutdown is really going to hurt. These snacks are easy to hand to kids at the end of the day or before a weekend www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/...
