Really really nasty article. The closest it comes to actually describing Pepys's sexual violence are the euphemistic "licentious episodes" and "sexual behaviour", which might indicate a degree of embarrassment on the part of the author if I didn't think the whole thing was in entirely bad faith
Another ludicrous culture war piece from a newspaper that was great in the past

I’ll admit that in the early days of Woke 1, I found some of the Singalesque views of gender-affirming care at least plausible. But then it became increasingly clear that for all their talk, the TERFs actually did not support gender nonconformity, either.
I don't think the Cass review is as bad as some think, it had been wildly oversold by GCs, but I do think a lot of the flaws originate in the view Cass articulates in this interview, namely that most trans people aren't actually trans, and that they are just gender non-conforming.

Our nurses at NYP Presby Hospital are still on strike today!
6 weeks on Monday.
The hospital is a disaster without them.
Contact NYPH heads, CEOs, tell them to keep nurses and patients safe and give their nurses a good contract!
Nurses, patients and hospital staff deserve better than this!
Nurses at Mount Sinai and Montefiore began returning to work Saturday after striking on the picket line in the cold and snow for nearly a month. More than 4,200 nurses at NewYork-Presbyterian, however, remain on strike.

a lot of ppl in the USA would’ve said this exact thing less than a decade ago, and a lot of ppl who live in countries with large far-right political movements rapidly gaining ground (often helped by the same tech billionaire players as here) seem too busy looking askance at the States to notice
It's great to live in a country (Canada, Japan, UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, etc.) where citizens don't worry about if the next election will be canceled, if they will be allowed to register to vote, if they will have to stand in line for hours to vote, or if their vote will be counted.

It's galling to contemplate but I really think you have to admit that Musk buying X was an unqualified victory. It can't be exaggerated just how much prominent journalists, pundits, business type, etc. mistake the vibe on X for "how the country is feeling."

I still think the internet is the best comp for AI. It was a bubble that popped, but the underlying tech turned out to be real. It enabled a bunch of psychosis and slop, but also some genuinely cool stuff. Massive labor market disruptions, but employment levels look about the same.

I have been thinking for a long time about the uses and more commonly abuses of the term “Western” in this broad civilizational sense, and a major conclusion I have reached is that it is paraphyletic. That is to say, it groups things together that are farther apart than things it excludes.

🧵In today’s Times @joshglancy.bsky.social has a brilliant write up of our focus groups he sat in on. Definitely read it in full! But I want to focus on two voters: Kylie & Eve I think have outsized importance in explaining today’s politics

this exact phenomenon is currently crippling the Trump administration for those inclined to disagree
Really underrated how much of the Biden years flopping was about communications failures that stemmed from having a principal who was no longer an above average or even average political communicator. :/

ICE using the same ruse that Ted Bundy used to kidnap people should tell you something.
CCTV footage appears to show DHS agents posing as people having car trouble in order to lure a target out of his house before arresting them. The target comes out and starts helping them before 3 vehicles surround the scene. The car "experiencing" trouble then drives off with them.

There are still National Guard at some DC Metro stations and it’s so pathetic. They get dropped off in a van, stand around looking at their phones for 8 hours, then get picked up again by the van. It’s not even security theater at this point, just money being lit on fire.

Instead of sending out fundraising emails they restored funding for the program! The used their power to resolve the crisis! How is this supposed to be evidence that they didnt care???
