i really want to impress on people that fares, crime, cleanliness etc are like way down the priority list. what matters with transit chiefly is “does it get you to where you’re going in a reasonable amount of time” and “does it get you there reliably”
LA metro is adding more miles than practically any other rail network in the country but honestly most of it is unusable, running slower than cars in the most traffic-heavy city in the country.
LA is like every worst supermajority blue city stereotype. ribbon-cutting ceremony for 'la sombrita' while throwing away millions of dollars that would have funded actually useful things. meanwhile LA metro opposes building dense housing near transit

"transit crime" matters a lot to people who take the train like 4 times a year for fun, and are shocked by the existence of homeless people every time. If you're actually taking transit for the commute, you get over that and care way more about where it's going, headways, speed, reliability, etc

Frankly even reliability and "the trains not constantly being on fire" matters less than it going where you want to go, as demonstrated by the MBTA having decent ridership through its crisis

there’s a reason philosophy and religion have an extremely long history of treating ambition as a necessary evil - at best.
genuinely not trying to throw shade here, I think most of us have gotten stuck in this kind of loop at some point for something (even if just a stupid video game) but I honestly think the single most mentally healthy thing that’s happened to me in the last decade is losing all my ambition
Token Anxiety

i think i mostly echo this for myself. with so much that can be done, i often feel like i *should* be doing something, always

While MLPS was a victory, moral and tangibly, for ICE resisters, don't call it 'a retreat.' The dystopia is just getting started

Thousands of new agents. 150 new offices in every state. And the nationwide gulag archipelago. The fight has just begun

My new column www.inquirer.com/opinion/ice-...
No, ICE isn’t ‘retreating.’ It’s loading up to invade your town. | Will Bunch
A much-hyped ICE pullback from Minneapolis is a blip in a looming nationwide surge of arrests, concentration camps.

I also have no idea who these people are BUT for quite a while some of THEEEEEE most popular mommy blogs and crafting blogs were run by Mormon women who did NOT let on that they were Mormon and they have shaped a LOT of parenting, crafting, and holiday celebration norms in the intervening decades.
how can they have conquered pop culture when nobody knows who tf these ppl are
America is in the middle of a second Mormon Moment. For our Cover Story, Bridget Read reports on how the women of Utah blogged and posted their way into our hearts and wallets. tinyurl.com/484awp7j

It's unchartered, but we can see the terrain: the territory ahead includes masked secret police taking people to concentration camps but not new vaccines. That's our reward for a system in which fewer than 20 people, all of them deranged and malicious, control over $3 trillion.
The pace at which US wealth concentration is rising is simply staggering

The concentration of AI wealth into the hands of a few tech barons + plutocratic capture ==> unchartered territory

One of the big lessons of this is that if the federal government gives states funding for housing, job training centers, community centers, & libraries, it barely happens & the feds get no credit. Trump 2 is a weirdly strong argument for the value of big government, if run properly
huh, was there any time recently when a reconciliation bill devoted a giant amount of money towards investments like that
Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

At heart I think he's another middle aged dad who grew up when everyone agreed trans people were a disgusting laughingstock who has a visceral negative reaction to the idea that if one of his sons told him that they were a girl, he is supposed to accept it.

No, he opposes allowing trans kids having access to healthcare. I one asked him directly if it was good that I underwent an unwanted puberty and he replied "it's complicated, sorry." He's been hiding it more lately because I think he figured out it loses him credibility in the coalition.

A lot of people on here have hated him for years but I think it’s undeniable that Yglesias has changed over the last 4 years. This is a guy whose two signature ideas were YIMBYism in 2012 (before any real YIMBY political movement existed) and 1 billion Americans in 2020 (in the teeth of Trump 1).
Matt. Matty. Buddy. Let's take a walk. Let's talk about "people have a hard time changing their mind because it involves cognitive dissonance and that affects their ego and self conception." You would know about this. For instance...
from a measurement POV, the party trust Q has little direct bearing on issue positions/policy preferences. party trust can be low for a variety of non-ideological reasons, like past history of leadership or message clarity. Dems have work to do, but this Q doesn’t tell us what

Folks, if you are dependent on 1099 income, set aside 25% of every single check and deposit it into an account that you specifically reserve only for income taxes.
I have literally cried coming away from doing taxes because even after eating nothing but crap and working extra I still got cleaned out. This is the reality for many, but Stancil is here to tell us how wonderful things are and we are all just so irresponsible.

After 9NEWS questioned ICE's claim and its timeline, ICE deleted the claim from its social media platforms.

But they have noticed in recent weeks a shift from aggressive street sweeps in Minneapolis to instead target people in the suburbs or quietly waiting in unmarked vehicles of residential areas.

This is partly true. But I’d add it’s because unionists, abolitionists, and black people have been excluded from the accepted narrative on southern culture. There are probably 500 people who know who Robert E Lee is for every person who has even heard the name “David Farragut” once in their lives.
I know I'm on a tear with this, but the white Southern culture - which is my heritage - is like this because at their core they know they have nothing to be proud of, but they've been taught to be the most proud, their whole lives
"White homeowners dress in period garb, open their homes to visitors and narrate a version of the past that foregrounds elegance, lineage and architectural beauty while relegating slavery to euphemism or omission."

There is a Kinda Guy that is absolutely gaga for Gruff-Aesthetic White Guy Who Says Kinda Lefty Things. Their love for this is *not* strategic or instrumental to some end, such a person is an object of intrinsic attraction to them, and a strong one at that. They will rationalise anything for this.
I also am baffled that people are assuming this super checkered barely known guy will be super progressive as though we're not living in a post Fetterman universe.
