i really want to impress on people that fares, crime, cleanliness etc are like way down the priority list. what matters with transit chiefly is “does it get you to where you’re going in a reasonable amount of time” and “does it get you there reliably”
LA metro is adding more miles than practically any other rail network in the country but honestly most of it is unusable, running slower than cars in the most traffic-heavy city in the country.
LA is like every worst supermajority blue city stereotype. ribbon-cutting ceremony for 'la sombrita' while throwing away millions of dollars that would have funded actually useful things. meanwhile LA metro opposes building dense housing near transit

"transit crime" matters a lot to people who take the train like 4 times a year for fun, and are shocked by the existence of homeless people every time. If you're actually taking transit for the commute, you get over that and care way more about where it's going, headways, speed, reliability, etc

Frankly even reliability and "the trains not constantly being on fire" matters less than it going where you want to go, as demonstrated by the MBTA having decent ridership through its crisis

genuinely not trying to throw shade here, I think most of us have gotten stuck in this kind of loop at some point for something (even if just a stupid video game) but I honestly think the single most mentally healthy thing that’s happened to me in the last decade is losing all my ambition

One of the big lessons of this is that if the federal government gives states funding for housing, job training centers, community centers, & libraries, it barely happens & the feds get no credit. Trump 2 is a weirdly strong argument for the value of big government, if run properly

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

No, he opposes allowing trans kids having access to healthcare. I one asked him directly if it was good that I underwent an unwanted puberty and he replied "it's complicated, sorry." He's been hiding it more lately because I think he figured out it loses him credibility in the coalition.

I have literally cried coming away from doing taxes because even after eating nothing but crap and working extra I still got cleaned out. This is the reality for many, but Stancil is here to tell us how wonderful things are and we are all just so irresponsible.

This is partly true. But I’d add it’s because unionists, abolitionists, and black people have been excluded from the accepted narrative on southern culture. There are probably 500 people who know who Robert E Lee is for every person who has even heard the name “David Farragut” once in their lives.

There is a Kinda Guy that is absolutely gaga for Gruff-Aesthetic White Guy Who Says Kinda Lefty Things. Their love for this is *not* strategic or instrumental to some end, such a person is an object of intrinsic attraction to them, and a strong one at that. They will rationalise anything for this.
I also am baffled that people are assuming this super checkered barely known guy will be super progressive as though we're not living in a post Fetterman universe.

I worked on a site with a few thousand employees. The gender neutral bathroom was two buildings away, and I used that when I first transitioned. Cis people have no idea how much effort we engage in for their biases and discomfort.
