remember how that mobile game Badland came out in the 2010s and instead of "we need to make games with strong art styles that are readable on small screens and don't overextend a touchscreen as a controller while challenging an unusual reflex" people cloned it mechanically and added paid retries

The full map to the original Castlevania. This is a brilliant map. Despite seeing a map in between stages, you don't really think about how it all connects, but the flow lines up almost perfectly making one cohesive castle.

The fact that it SHOWS you is extremely cool too. The map between stages makes sense and you can feel it. It's such a neat little game.
An like, colossal failures deserve to live. Art doesn't mind your success, it lives because life was breathed into it. We are better off that Balan Wonderworld can still be played. We are worse off the FF7 First Soldier can't
(Bc we can learn by playing bad games)

We are dealing with the death of art in video games. Not artistry, but the actual art will die. People spent their day jobs making Babylon's Fall, trying to create something. I have a copy of it on my shelf because it's value is a gag gift. The art is dead and can't be revived.

it's manifestly obvious that if we torched the servers and deleted the models the world would be net better off. I think calling for a "nuanced discussion" of a tech that is getting grillions in investiment and propaganda in spite of being obviously a net negative for humanity is just dumb.

the thing about LLMs is that they are demonstrably so harmful that trying to "inject nuance" by talking about their putative utility isn't nuanced, it's special pleading

some people have an intense, I think harmful, impulse to be Reasonable in a vague sense – not to take stances guided by logic or empathy but to simply find some notional nuanced middle ground they can occupy by default
Once again: people are angry for very good reason, and this brand of post is perhaps one of the most tedious and bewildering. Practically every social media platform is rabidly pro-‘AI’ so are govts, academia, companies. This one small space being critical of AI is okay, I think.

Your children are people with their own unique curiosities and drives. Instead of trying to shut all that shit down try giving them the tools to decide for themselves and do things as safely as possible. But that would mean trusting them and why would you do that, eh?

Your fucking job is to prepare them for a world full of all sorts of awful awful shit. Getting the government to help you pretend none of that exists and then letting your kids loose with nothing to prepare them at 18 is fucked up and you shouldn't do it.

As a fucking parent TALK TO YOUR FUCKING KIDS THEN. Worried they'll see porn? Talk to them about porn. Worried they'll see gore? Talk to them about gore. Worried they'll get groomed? Talk to them about red flags and cultivate trust with them so they won't feel they have to hide things from you.
"As a parent, I am deeply concerned about what my child is accessing online. Albeit not enough to check or to install some very basic software that would prevent them from accessing dodgy material online. That's why the Online Safety Act is so important."

Serial Experiments Lain is a cautionary, deeply political story about how cool the Sharp X68000 looked, and what would happen if computers kept looking like that.

Ultimately right now in video games I feel surrounded by people who are worried, all the time, about long-term unemployment and ensuing social (or actual) death and so if you seem very invested in coming up with fun uses for LLMs in games I find you despicable.

Anyway, G-Modes Archives and their efforts to re-release Japanese feature phone games of all sorts is quietly one of the coolest things going on in game preservation. Even if you don't read Japanese, many games are perfectly playable. Look some up and throw them a few bucks so they can keep going. 🙏

Do not purchase a membership on iOS because those fees ARE absolutely real and do suck, but they are the least important issue about the recent ongoings with Patreon and the iOS app. The subscription model forced onto all creators and users is THE problem, and Patreon is using Apple as a scapegoat.
