NEW: A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order barring Chicago-area fed agents from several violent actions they’ve taken against journalists, activists and “religious practitioners” protesting ICE — including Rev. Black, a plaintiff in the case. www.courtlistener.com/docket/71559...

It’s quite simple: Congress can say a “day” is months when counting economic “emergencies”; the President* can say 6mos is a “year” for annual physicals. It’s all there in the Constitution, clearly.

President Trump is going to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Friday morning for what the White House says is his "routine yearly checkup," just six months after undergoing what the White House at the time described as his "annual physical examination" at the same facility.

I'm always struck by the analogy between the tech/rationalist community and AI and the Evangelical Christian community and the end times. In each case, they, on some level fear what is coming, are obsessed with the topic, and are also constantly drawn to making catastrophe more likely.

Me in 2023: Just chill. All the AI doom scenarios involve giving models direct access to and control over real world systems, and no one would be that dumb

An up or down vote on extending the ACA subsidies, and I would add a separate up or down vote the same day to release the Epstein files.

So they're just going to trust Republicans. Didn't they also promise a vote to fund DC after the Big Ugly Bill stripped $1.1B in funding to the District? How did that go?

Netanyahu's mouthpiece, Amit Segal, casually admits on Twitter that his country has been holding 1,700 people from Gaza hostage, including children.
Among other things, according to the decision:

- 250 security prisoners will be released.
- 1,700 residents of the Gaza Strip who were not involved in the events of October 7 and were arrested after the massacre will be released.
- 22 minors under the age of 18, residents of the Gaza Strip who were not involved in the events of October 7 and were arrested after the massacre, will be released.
- 360 bodies of terrorists will be returned.

I think Paul, of blessed posting memory, is entirely right here, and I say this *even though* the young people I know remain highly literate and engaged, because I think his sample is way more representative than mine.

1. Anti-trans outrage is losing its bite.

Last week, Elon Musk led a mass boycott campaign to get trans characters removed from shows on the platform.

Major conservatives joined in.

Now, we have the result: the boycott was a fizzle, and Netflix stock is up.

I might end up talking about this graph all day.

I think one thing Dems need to realize is that "Americans" are not buying into the "cities on fire" lies of this admin.

It's JUST Republicans. So if you're a governor of a solidly blue state, or a blue-city mayor, the national story is NOT YOURS.
Gallup poll showing a wild divergence in "is crime rising" over the past two years, w GOP at 90, independents at 68, Dems at 29.

I liked reading and recommend this essay by @sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com, in particular for the argument that fighting does not mean mindless aggression or abandoning values, but does require eschewing procedural caution while remaining anti-doomerist. (Plus Clausewitz and Biddle references!)
Democrats Must Embrace War Mindset
We have exited a long period of peace and entered into a struggle not unlike war, in which all the old certainties have gone malleable and the future of the republic is at stake.

I cancelled yesterday.

You’ve gotta be kidding me.

This WaPo editorial presents a misleading revisionist history of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s criminal cases against Trump.

Then it has the gall to compare that to Trump’s overt targeting of his perceived enemies.

Really embarrassing stuff.
