For WIP Wednesday, I humbly offer @tenderashell.bsky.social this proof of life. Been stuck for awhile, but things are moving along again…
Saturday mornings at the library were Ed’s favorite. Even when he wasn’t officially on the schedule, he was always there. Saturdays were for Storytime. Ed got to spend all his time in the children’s wing, watching the kids’ eyes light up when they found the perfect book. He often stepped in to do the reading himself if they were short of volunteers. Ed was very good at doing the voices. It was kind of his thing (humblebrag), and the kids loved it. This particular morning, it was nearing time to begin and it was starting to look as though Ed would in fact have to do Storytime himself, as their scheduled volunteer reader seemed to have flaked. Ed was in the process of getting the kids settled in on the reading carpet when he heard a voice cry out, rather loudly for the library, “I’m here!” Ed’s head snapped up and he choked on the reproachful “Shhh” that was bubbling up in his throat. There in the doorway stood a solid, rectangular, blonde, frantically panting man. He was wearing skinny jeans and a cream colored shirt, covered by a teal blazer and a messenger bag strapped across his broad frame. He had his hand clutched to his chest as he tried to catch his breath. He was casting his eyes wildly about, and when they finally landed on Ed, his face broke into a wide grin and oh god. Dimple. Ed swallowed. The man approached him with his hand outstretched. “Hello there! I’m Stede Bonnet. Volunteer reader. You must be the librarian!”

here’s another snippet of chapter 16 of jamestown ferry to tide you over until we get it posted (and because i have nothing else to offer for wip wednesday)
“Not at all,” Stede answers with an even bigger smile, radiant in the weird yellow light of the porch. “Please do.” Ed hurries to the kitchen and finds an empty coffee can he’d set aside, filling it with a bit of water and popping the flowers in. If Anne sees them, she’ll scold him about it, so he makes a mental note to either dig out a vase or go get one from her and Mary in the next day or two. Once they’re settled enough for the time being, though– because he does quite like them and wants to make them last as long as he can– he returns to the door, where Stede’s still looking like a fucking angel in merino and polyester, perfectly content to let Ed do whatever he needs to do. “I’m not gonna sleep with you tonight,” Ed says, apropos of absolutely nothing, apparently, as he locks the apartment door and takes the arm Stede’s held out to him. Stede huffs out a laugh like he’s a little caught off-guard, but he takes it in stride, leading him to the car like Ed isn’t already being weird and hostile. “That’s perfectly fine,” he says. “I didn’t expect you to.” Ed can’t really admit to him that he’d said it more for himself than anything, so he just nods and lets go of Stede’s arm as he opens the passenger door for him. “Okay. Just saying,” he replies ineloquently, offering a tiny smile as a truce as Stede closes the door and makes his way around to the driver’s seat.

Well, fuck, you really pulled it off, Stede.” Stede preens, looking down at his outfit. “Thanks!” “Shocked me, too,” Archie adds with a playful grin before leaving the two of them alone so she can finish getting Louis ready for his sleepover. Ed shakes his head, laughing a little. “Fuckin’ mustache and everything? That’s dedication.” “Go big or go home, or something,” Stede shrugs. “Seems like you did the same. Your makeup is stunning, Ed.” Ed’s fingers fly to his face, lightly dabbing at the silver eyeshadow painted all the way up to his brows. “Yeah, well, been planning this one since last year.” “Paid off, I think. Did you make the jacket?” “Nah,” he admits, almost bashfully. “I did commi/ssion someone else to though.” Stede steps closer, inspecting all the sparkly details. “Too bad. You and Alma could have commiserated on your costume work. Come on, they’re all back here. I’m sure they’d love to say hi.” “Oh, hey Ed!” Louis shouts from the floor where he’s pulling on a pair of sneakers. “What are you anyway?”

He shifts, and his eternally spying phone on the coffee table before him lights up for no reason. No messages, no calls, just white numerals in front of an image of the sea. Or, the blasted phone knows he wants to call Ed. The idea tortures him. He’s taken to leaving the phone in his office at night, lest he reach for it in some in-between dreamstate and press the forbidden button. He’s so desperate for answers, he talks to himself in the shower, in the kitchen, playing out conversations and arguments (and reconciliations) like he’s rehearsing for a play. Like if he can just mock up the perfect interaction, he’ll know what to do. _Ed, I don’t understand. Why?_ _I’m only a man, Stede. Only a man in love._ Outrageous. Absurd. Two-bit fanfiction. But Lucius would tell him to call. Olu too, probably. He fishes a quarter out of the catchall vintage ashtray on the table, hiding beneath several mystery bits of plastic his kids have deposited there. He positions it on his thumb, flips it into the air. As the quarter ascends, time slows. Warps. As though to allow him ample space to understand that he already knows exactly how he wants it to land. The coin flips three, four, five times. He watches, head tilted, heart speeding as time slows. This is it, he understands. The coin will land on heads, and he will pick up his phone and have no choice but to call Ed because the universe willed it, it was beyond his control— The coin drops smoothly, silently to the table. Against all odds and laws of physics, the quarter sticks the landing like a gymnast coming off the uneven bars with her tiny feet touching: it stands tall on its edge, taunting him. He throws it across the room.

For #WIPWednesday, another little snip of the soulmarks fic I've been working on.
How does one begin a new chapter? Once upon a time there was a man who was hollow inside. He wanted so desperately to fill the hollow space inside of him even though he knew he was not like other people. He was not entitled to feel whole. He was not capable of it. So he built a boat. He stood on the deck of his boat and… There was the ellipsis again, giving Stede a lifeline to cling on to and keep him safe, like the ropes mooring the ship, stopping him from just catapulting out into the confusion of the unknown. “Hey, mate. You Stede Bonnet?” A voice from behind Stede broke through his thoughts and he spun around to face a tall man dressed all in black, long silvering hair falling over his shoulders, a close cropped silver beard on his chin, and dark eyes that seemed to see right into Stede’s soul. “Uh… You’ve heard of me?” was all Stede could think to say.

It’s still too hot, he can feel it on the back of his throat. “Never could tell what?” “Whether this was a ‘secret lovers’ thing or ‘will-they, won’t-they’ thing.” Ed feels his hands tremble just a little. He slams the mug down so hard on the table a little liquid splashes on the table. Fuck it. “Reckon that’s none of your business,” he says. Lucius looks gleeful, which just pisses Ed off. “Well, that’s more than I got out of Stede,” he says with a sigh.
