The Great Extended Universe Re-reading Thread:
For various reasons I've fallen down the rabbit hole of re-reading the old Star Wars Extended Universe novels. For those unfamiliar with the term, these are the books published before the great Disney takeover and purge.

Avisa Oslo har fleire artikler om denne tragikomiske saka frå Alexander Kiellands plass måndag, men denne var tidlegast og er dessutan ikkje mura inn. Biletteksta er ekstra fornøyeleg.

This article heavily implies that ICE is being used in a custody dispute to help Karoline Leavitt's brother get his son and have the mother locked up in ICE detention
"A woman with a family connection to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Revere, Massachusetts."

Turns out shit like this is bad for your brand.

The fun bit was the moment someone from their social media team CLEARLY finally managed to get through to someone important enough to get a message to the call centre.

At which point SUDDENLY it was "oops oh yeah sprry let's cancel that for you."

Didn't expect to learn about sugar today, but using "too much sugar is bad for you" as a way to explain AI is pretty cool.

"I worry we’re not paying attention to what AI is doing to our cognitive metabolism."

Great reflections by @arcticdba.se!
BLOG ALERT!

Sugar went from luxury to ubiquitous poison before we understood what it was doing to us. We're doing the exact same thing with AI, adding it to everything without genuine use cases while it erodes literacy and critical thinking. #AI #Literacy

You know, I would just not pick a fight with Isaac Chotiner. Chotiner and @dieworkwear.bsky.social

If either of them decides to toss of a single-post roast of me, I'm just going to walk right on by. Maybe wave. Cause what I ain't gonna do is win.
A new kind of rapid Chotining. Please appreciate the alt-text.

I think often about how we fought in Afghanistan for 20 years and most Americans don’t have the foggiest idea that a defining part of the challenge for those who served was a culture that enables the widespread systemic rape of young boys.
My infantry Bn had a really hard time parsing the gender and sexuality issues of Southern Helmand.

When people say, "you wouldn't want a 'purple haired gender studies major' in the Marines" I reply "YES we desperately needed them!" We had teams of anthropologists who published studies for us.

As we are now T minus 3.5 days from Thanksgiving, if you need to deploy Operation Avoid The Boundary Tramplers, tonight is when you post where they snoop about a headache or a queasy kid, or a funny noise from your car, or your pet acting strange, or a serious work issue or an unexpected paper.

This is the funniest piece imaginable in the dull world of the otherwise sickly sycophantic tech review.

For real. Read it, even if you don’t give a rat’s ass about printers.

I 100% agree and would add that if you are hosting a holiday event and you do NOT have something festive, creative and delicious for your guests to drink without alcohol in it, you are actually an asshole

don't make them drink tap water while everyone else has bespoke cocktails!
Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

I've mentioned this a few times throughout the thread: the CEO's response to a media shitstorm about the severe child safety problem was to explain, several days later, that the site that's nearly half under-13s has the potential to be a great dating site.

Holy Hecate. That is bad.
Oh, God, this is one of those "where do I even start" things, because Roblox is, like, *fractally* fucked. They are terrible at content moderation. A lot of the games are rated incorrectly, so kids can encounter graphic content (sex or violence) out of nowhere --

This weekend's cover is a creepy version of Jolene. Originially written and released by Dolly Parton in 1973, this one has also seen quite a few covers but this is by far my favorite.

Every parent whose career has to do with online safety also bans Roblox.
Every game designer parent I know bans Roblox for their kids

We’re watching a shift where AI simulates the cohesion and reinforcement that used to require an entire online community. A single person can now build a complete parallel reality with nothing more than a prompt window. Which seems bad.
