I triple dare people fuck about with the Zephyr rules because

1. Most of them would have no fucking idea of the ramifications (hilarious)

2. I wanna see y'all tinker with something that ain't 2d6 goblin-ass bullshit
i'll go a step further and say that ideally, a tightly designed game *self-destructs* if you try to disregard some part of the rules. if a part of the rules is disregardable, the writer should have rewritten or cut it, and the game is shit

The pervasive, entrenched, and unexamined assumption that underpins huge swathes of the hobby to the effect of "nobody ever plays an RPG rules-as-written, if you do this you're a joyless deranged freak tyrant" feels very weird to me, as someone who has historically played most RPGs as-written

Random thing that always amuses me: GURPS is the generic universal roleplaying system, right?

GURPS spaceships is the splatbook for building and flying around spaceships!

and yet, they are some of the LEAST generic, LEAST universal spaceship rules I've ever read. It's actually really charming.

Pressure VRchat now, they also use Persona.

Vrchat uses persona.

Vrchat uses persona.

Persona is backed by Peter Thiel.

Peter Thiel is pushing for a surveillance state in the US and appears in the Epstein files hundreds of times.

Still thinking about this quote.
"Our standing rule is: If one of us brings up using GenAI in any of our work, then it's safe to assume we've been assimilated by The Thing and should be burned alive by Kurt Russell," said a game design consultant in the US.
Over 50% of game developers now think generative AI is bad for the industry, a dramatic increase from just 2 years ago: 'I'd rather quit the industry than use generative AI'
The latest GDC survey also found that managers are more likely to use generative AI than their employees.

If this is the case, then what possible reason is there to drop 30 bucks on a 250 page PDF?

Like...

I'm buying the game because of the synergy between the premise and the text. If you can disregard the latter, then the former is fucking free
I am circling around a thing today, and I swear I'm gonna catch it. Lunging again:

Groups play some mix of the text of the game and their own view of the *promise* of the game, and the further you are into playing the promise, the less the details of the text matter.

whenever I think "short dev cycle and cheap" I think about the guy who liked a short, cheap game I made and attempted to convince me to take my ideas and do LOTS of that for multiple revenue streams

he later stole a ton of pitches from us and abused a bunch of his workers

One thing @commandersterling.bsky.social said ages ago that sticks with me in all of my hobbyist pursuits.

There is no one perfect sauce, only perfect sauces.

That came to mind more than once in the recent string of ttrpg "manifestos" I've seen passed around.

There are two kinds of people in the world:

People who suffered, and think because of that, everyone else should suffer the way they did because otherwise it's not fair.

People who suffered, and think because of that, no one else should have to suffer either.

Be the second.

Smaller budget games and 40$ releases sure won't fix the loss of institutional knowledge from firing everyone the moment a game launches or everybody being broke as fuck+the majority consumer buying (1) game a year, this is enthusiasts going "I would like the market to be nicer for enthusiasts"

I'm not gonna interact with that big post but I always thought "AAA needs to cut the budgets and start making more, cheaper games" was more about trying to get the single-A smaller franchises back over Fixing The Entire Industry. It's shorthand for "man what if the franchises I like released games"

This is sucks in how it frames the "human" as a form of accessing games in "open ended, rules-bendy" ways when so many actually find it frustrating to be told they shouldn't access games via rigid, mathematizable procedures.

As usual in this RPGs, only specific kinds of neurodivergence is tolerated

Live service has been incredibly toxic to the industry, and sure we have had them for a long time in the form of MMOs, but MMOs were and still are a specific kind of game for a specific audience

everything attempting to turn into MMO-lite kills the attention economy games used to have
