Our Nosferatu playthrough of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines continues! We're now headed to Chinatown, where the late-game action and the 2004 edgelordiness both pick up steam. This part of the game is like a very sticky time capsule that also somehow has frosted tips. www.twitch.tv/trooperbari/

I thoroughly reject that generative AI is something we are going to have to accept, it's simply not going to be true even in the wildest dreams of AI evangelists, and we have plenty of examples of games where AI generated elements were removed, so we know for a fact it can be done successfully.

One of the reasons I've never bought into AI doomerism, is that to believe "it's here to stay, get used to it!" you have to buy into the idea that AI generated elements are so hardcoded or integral as to be permanent, when they really aren't.

You can simply remove it, and it's gone just like that.

Zero reckoning from any of the elites who credulously parroted the absurd idea that the right wing was in favor of free speech.

JK Rowling got a full *decade* of press as a martyr for being "cancelled" (declared passe by people online) and meanwhile nobody considers it very interesting that a prominent left wing author is basically banned from entering or publishing in the United Kingdom for her politics
so this is like, one of the biggest free speech infringements by a western democracy in our lifetimes right?

For those that don't know what this is - the government suppressed this expert report on Clinical Guidelines for Transgender Health 24 hours before it was due to go out, and played politics with the lives of young transgender people.

You can now read the report in full.

Is it herd mentality? The dregs of Orientalism? Lazy journalism? Why do western media orgs just blindly publish ‘the fire started because of the bamboo’ stories? If Hong Kong has bamboo scaffolding for 100 years surely there is a history of fires every other week? www.instagram.com/reel/DRlhAjG...

trans people, especially kids, are a existential threat to the foundation of conservatism because they inherently require allowing your propert, er sorry kids, a degree of autonomy to transition. they’re a threat to them the same way no fault divorce was and is
The universal descent into utter bugfuckery by all these “gender critical” or whatever types seems like there’s something else there and they’re all grasping onto trans shit as a way to do something other than mere out-group hatred, you know?

Reading this article made me remember just how much weight we all wake up underneath every day.

Like, holy hell, how did it start feeling *normal* to live in a country where the government announced that I don't exist and that it will take escalating steps to eliminate people like me?
This is a really good New Republic article about trans people leaving the country. Do some research about getting visas. Start now. It is harder and slower than you think, and there are no opportunities for asylum right now. It also is entirely doable.

Reflexively blaming bamboo with no evidence and no effort to address regulatory failures is journalist malpractice but it doesn’t stop there.

Portraying living in a high-rises as a poor-people-thing, not a choice people gladly make, is the most condescending West-brained thing I’ve read in a while.

Pro-democracy parties existed to be thorns in the government’s side — true enough. But the official story, that they “politicised” everything while the establishment camp championed livelihood issues, does not match the reality.

See below for an example of how they also pushed back on local issues.

Agreed. You can tell who's actually paid attention versus who has parachuted in with no clue. Are they talking about the lack of fireproof netting, Styrofoam, and layers of subcontracting to eke out every cent? Or do they take the "Weird Japan" tack and go with what fits their SEO strategy?
International media, you can do better than this.

"Bamboo" is maybe exotic and a compelling hook but it is too easy. The real story here is the growing culture of corruption, including a lack of accountability and oversight, that enabled a chain of human errors that led to this disaster.

Further political context: In the 2019 District Council elections, all 19 of the elected seats of Tai Po District Council were won by "yellow" (i.e., Hong Kong pro-democracy) candidates. The pro-Beijing camp was completely wiped out bar for the two ex officio members of the 21 person strong body.
This 2024 post from the DAB’s Peggy Wong is quickly becoming infamous.

In it, the pro-Beijing district councillor dismisses fire safety concerns about the Wang Fuk work as malicious rumours misleading the public, and accuses the Democratic Party of “provocatively live-streaming “ from the scene.

i take frenzy damage every time i see someone go "well i just use it for the boring stuff". what are you TALKING about? if it's boring or unimportant, why are you putting it in? NPC dialogue is fertile ground for worldbuilding, creating verisimilitude, conveying important information, and hijinks!!
Buy a solo indie dev's game because I want to support them.

Find out it uses OpenAI to write "non-important NPC dialogue".
