We also use Gramsci’s quote in The Ecology Politic. I checked the original, worried about cliché, even found an obscure historical explanation. But, it really felt apposite. If you can find it, without using a search term, I’ll buy you a bottle of something.

Today’s students don’t read and their degrees are being hollowed out. So this strikes me as pretty extraordinary, like reading about Hardt and Negri’s Empire in the New York Times in 2000. Because pollies mangled the quote and Zizek can’t remember.

Australian Census on University Staff Wellbeing results are out. Every uni recorded scores indicating high/very high psych risk.

And in news surprising no one, "only senior execs and deans rated their workplaces as medium or low risk while all other staff groups reported high-risk conditions."

States can step in to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, and automakers will likely keep trying to reduce emissions to remain competitive in the global market. In the meantime, more Americans will die from air pollution and climate change because of the Trump regime.

Socius Redefining Discrimination: Dismantling Environmental Protections through the Logic of Reactionary Colorblindness Ian Carrillo and Annabel Ipsen Abstract - The authors examine the unique role that racism plays in guiding and structuring anti-environmental ideas and behaviors. They focus on the influence of reactionary colorblindness, which is a legal strategy that promotes race-neutral individuality and activates white resentment in seeking to reverse policies for racial equality. The authors ask, In what ways do anti-environmental policies harness, replicate, and repurpose the logic of reactionary colorblindness? They conduct a qualitative content analysis of a sample of the second Trump administration’s executive orders (EOs). In these EOs, the authors find that the administration draws on reactionary colorblindness as a tool to redefine discrimination and undermine environmental protection in three main ways: (1) the EOs justify eliminating environmental justice initiatives by claiming they confer group-based racial advantages that are antithetical to colorblind individuality; (2) the EOs label diversity, equity, and inclusion, environmental justice, and climate change programs as “forced discrimination” to rationalize policy dismantling; and (3) the EOs adopt a stance of ignorance toward environmental and climate science, thereby rejecting the rationale underlying policies that promote environmental and climate justice. The authors extend debates in environmental sociology and the sociology of race and ethnicity by analyzing how colorblindness and the racism of omission work in service of anti-environmentalism.

Air pollution from burning fossil fuels causes 100,000 to 200,000 avoidable American deaths per year. At the EPA's statistical value of life of $10 million, these deaths cost America $1 to $2 trillion per year, every year. These costs far outweigh the costs of transitioning off of fossil fuels.
