This is the sort of statement that was expected from every university president and law firm partner over the last year. That those statements weren’t made played a huge part in where we are now and people will remember.
Jerome Powell: "This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions—or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation."

kind of darkly funny that "gender studies" is the stereotypical "useless degree" because gender studies will help you understand a large and important chunk of the current psychosis in american life

Other person: "I don't believe that."

“Oh but if Democrats did that Republicans would just vote it down, wouldn’t convict and would rally their base to defend Trump’s crimes.”

Yeah, okay, make them do that then.

They don't say "please."
"The phrase 'your papers, please' has historically been the sort of demand we associated with Hitler’s SS or the East German Stasi."

Or American slave patrols. Or the last time we conducted mass raids to deport ppl to Mexico (most of whom were born here).

We don't need to go to Europe for history.
Trump’s Immigration Nightmare: It Is Happening Here
With astonishing speed, the administration has toppled the most cherished pillars of a free society. And the experts agree: It’s all going to get much, much worse.

This is a perfect example of David Brooks' job to comfort the comfortable, regardless of what he inflicts on the afflicted. Brooks' audience is upset not at the lack of decency, but at the lack of silence from those America never treated decently before: the impoverished, the queer, the brown.
Why have Americans become so mean, sad, and alienated? The answer is simple, @nytdavidbrooks argues. People no longer grow up learning how to be decent to one another: bit.ly/4qskLny

The original Times Roman better than Times New Roman imo. At least, better than the Microsoft implementation of it.

Related - here's a slide I've been using this year. (this was from a presentation at @massdot.bsky.social Moving Together conference in Oct). On L is a 2018 Ford F series, and on the R is a 2011 Ford Ranger. Both are Ford 'light trucks'! People love the smaller stuff, just not as readily available.

This is political malpractice.

I keep telling myself, between gritted teeth, "this is the leadership we've got. Root for them to get it right."

But damn. I don't know if they can. #messaging
I really don't like to criticize Democrats at a time like this, but "Strong Floor, No Ceiling" is just... structurally unsound.

And it's a reminder that we can't be DC Democrats to be the messengers who get us out of this. We need to start thinking about 2028 instead—for multiple reasons.
Democrats’ New Slogan Is a Donor-Class Disaster
It’s time to start the 2028 primary and step over this donor-coddling nonsense.

Some intersting takes (in quote reposts) on an interesting poll.

I'd rather be Markey than Moulton.

UNH poll | 11/13-11/17 LV

Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary

Ed Markey 34% (incumbent)
Seth Moulton 25%
Alex Rikleen 2%
Write in someone else 3%
Don’t know/undecided 35%

Every Democrat in Congress should put out a video saying troops have an obligation to refuse unlawful orders. Make them prosecute all of you. This isn't a close call.

I'd add Republicans too if I thought any of them had the courage to actually cross Trump on this.
Hegseth is now threatening to recall Sen. Mark Kelly to active duty in order to court martial him.

This is actually good spin, or would have been. But the fact that the Democratic cave happened without even a coordinated, agreed-upon message like this indicates the depth of the leadership void.

They THINK (if that is the word) that they are depriving Democrats of a win.
i legitimately don’t understand what they think they’re doing here, from a political or strategic standpoint

If I were running the DNC, there would be Democratic Party sponsored food relief banks across the country right now that specifically welcomed anyone regardless of party affiliation.

Along with the food, there could be voter registration and links to runforsomething.net

You should be able to go to your local Democratic Party headquarters and get help with anything you need help with. Don't have a printer and need to print out a form? We gotcha! Need help applying for a passport? We gotcha! Need a bathroom or a sandwich? We gotcha!

Let's do this with Boston Bluebikes and the T!
this very nice article about the state of Bike Share Toronto has an exciting possibility hidden near the end:

they're exploring the possibility of making it so you can pay a single fare for a trip that uses transit (TTC) and bikes

How Bike Share Toronto got big — and what it will take to keep rolling
The system has hooked the city on e-bikes and conquered the Toronto Islands. Could integration with the TTC be next? Or will Premier Ford’s bike lane battle spell doom?

Rep Seth Moulton, challenging @edmarkey.bsky.social for US Senate, leads with complaint that Dems are "just out of touch" because supporting trans rights.

At #NoKings, Markey, wearing transgender flag, effectively replies, "bring that on, Seth!"

The primary will tell.
Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) at the Boston No Kings rally today, wore the trans pride flag like a scarf draped over his shoulders and included in his speech. "Because here in Massachusetts, we stand for what is right. We stand with trans people because trans rights are human rights."
