My first weekend in North Carolina was the 4th of July. My ex and I were staying with his buddy (who turned out to be a massive POS.)

He brought us to a house party thrown by two state troopers from Whiteville. It was worse than you think.
When I, a pasty white northerner, moved to North Carolina, arguably one of the northern-most southern states, I was shocked and appalled at the level of overt, in-your-face racism that was paired with hatred for northerners.

White leftist history teacher in Mississippi here. The entirety of conservatism in this state and the south writ large has been one long backlash to reconstruction. The modern iteration is a backlash to Brown v. Board. Race politics supercede everything else. Every school district, voter precinct...

yes, whites in the north can also be racist. yes, the north has a long history of systematically exploiting its nonwhite residents.

but none of this is enough to overcome the fact that "The South" — as a cultural object, a kind of shared imaginary — is defined by rebellion in support of slavery.

This is where the U.S. is for kindergarten vaccine exemptions.

If every state allowed only medical exemptions from childhood vaccine requirements for school entry, as it should be in my opinion, this problem would disappear.

And it’s not just the overall rate, it’s the clustering of exemptions.

'To crip something is to bend, compress, twist, subvert, and imbue disabled wisdom into systems, institutions, and cultures. As I’ve done before as a physically disabled person, I will now crip the world ... It takes a tremendous amount of emotional and physical labor to crip the world.'

I’m incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of Alice Wong, who was a bright light and a clear voice for so many of us. May her memory live on in those she loved who loved her in return, and may we all continue to elevate her work in intersectional disability justice.

“As they discussed possible outcomes, Dershowitz said he refused to make Epstein “into a public pariah.”

Dershowitz should be a public pariah.
this is excellent and utterly outrageous and further confirmation we are living through a period of extreme decadence and corruption by a relatively small clique that i think it’s fair to describe as leading members of the ruling class

This - and a million stories like it - is why it infuriates me to be instructed to reach some mythical middle. Right and wrong is an on/off switch and you either repudiate vile acts of racism or you are part of making them more acceptable.

a huge reason the auto industry cannot hire all the mechanics they need is lack of access to the technical education anyone needs to become an automotive technician! cost of this education & failure by corporations to train workers - also a huge factor.

In 1582, a papal bull introduced the Gregorian calendar, still used today by most of the world. Because it’s 11 days ahead of the Julian calendar, countries introducing it simply skipped a third of October, and if you scroll back far enough in the iPhone calendar app you can see it change

The whole concept of things being "political" is largely a way to artificially separate terrible people and actions from the terrible reality they caused. Sure people can be politically motivated to do things, but at this point it's largely lost its meaning.
