I genuinely think this one is a little trickier than it first appears - previous years showed similar statistics and it's a safe bet that the reason is, well. look at the concurrent players charts. A small crop of older "forever games" basically permanently occupies the majority of steam's audience

beyond that I think _playtime_ is a dangerous metric for this because it heavily biases some games over others - I guarantee you that the highest-selling linear games are a tiny playtime blip compared to any game that incentivizes running in the background, or anything multiplayer _at all_
