You know how in Murder, She Wrote, Jessica Fletcher is always going to the aid of her niece or school friend’s daughter or whatever in sorts of locations? There should be a modern mystery series where someone is going to the aid of all their internet friends all over the world.

Whoa, that was fast. I didn't even have time to get worked up about the SFWA announcement today about LLMs in the Nebulas before they updated the language to be wholly anti-AI. From the email that just arrived: (copied in alt text)

At this point, many people have told me that this take is garbage. Honestly they are right! I said this because I thought that SFWA members WANTED to include AI generated work in all categories. Clearly they don't. Which makes it even weirder to me that SFWA leadership does?
Why don't you create a separate award for AI-generated work? Surely you can't mean that all the Nebula Awards could potentially be given to people who don't write their own work?

It me
Imagine someone who, when they eat certain fruits, gets a tingling feeling in their throat and lips, and those areas get a little bit red and itchy.

That's an allergic reaction!

Even if they don't need to have an epi-pen, they are still allergic to those items!

Absolutely horrifying news this morning. One thing that hits me is that Mel Brooks is still with us and for him it's like losing a nephew - or even a son. Rob Reiner wasn't only a brilliant talent himself. He was part of an extended family who incubated some of the greatest talent in movies.

Look, I just don't give a fuck. I'd rather support people who want to game the system than risk harming those who are vulnerable. I just don't care. The wealthy can afford to pay taxes to pay for it. The math works out. We can support everyone. It's just the will to do it.
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

I didn't get an answer, so let's crowdsource

How do you effectively make the world accessible to people with disabilities while making sure people who don't need it don't take advantage but without denying access to people who need it?

i think the answer is "stop being a cop about it."
so how do you solve the problem without denying access to people who need it?

Having spent some time in care as a child, I recommend this very fine essay, and the Subtack it comes from. Matt Taylor is a writer to watch.
“I grew up in care, not prison. I say it like a fact, like my phone number, recited without thinking. But none of that matters, because they want an answer.

‘So, what did you do wrong?’”

This is a great piece of writing by @matt-taylor.bsky.social
