In my newsletter, I wrote about The Spoonbill Club--a series of birding trips that I started for Bay Area folks with long-COVID and related energy-limiting illnesses.

We've done 2 small pilots that I think worked well. Here's more on the intention & planning: buttondown.email/edyong209/ar...

The Incredible, True Story of Jeremy Tortoise's Day Off (of Blue Heron Farm): the character-driven saga* that gripped the world! Mystery! Drama! SEX! and a (literal) feel-good ending.

(* Not a real saga. More like a roller-coaster of a short story. Plus it did not involve Vikings. Probably.)
OMG WE FOUND HIM. THE PEOPLE HOLDING HIM WERE ALSO GOOD SAMARITANS. THEY MADE CHRISTIAN IDENTIFY HIM BY HIS SHELL DAMAGE. HE'S GOING TO BE COMING HOME BUT HE IS
FUCKING ANOTHER TURTLE RIGHT NOW. OOPS.

When facing the "All we need is STEM!" approach to education, my usual response is: Developing the vaccine was the STEM problem; distribution & getting shots in arms was the Social Science problem; getting people to trust it & combatting misinformation was the Humanities problem-- which did we fail?

Biden in 2022: "The pandemic is over because no one's wearing masks"

Biden in 2023: "will be masking while indoors and around people"

The pandemic is not over. Leaders should tell people to take precautions (just as they are) to prevent potentially harmful COVID reinfections.

More amazing work by Lia Pas. The embroidery work is terrific. The expression of the subject matter is incredible.

#SciArtSeptember Day 5: strangling

This symptomatology embroidery, neuraesthenia (2017), depicts the sensation of post-exertional malaise (PEM), the hallmark symptom of ME/CFS. PEM feels like an extreme heaviness, as if the energy system of the body is being strangled. #SciArt 🧶🩺🧪🐡

Every space where a majority of people mask makes that space more accessible to everyone, especially higher risk people. Everyone has the right to access essential spaces like healthcare and public transport safely, even if COVID is spreading elsewhere.

Not a great day. GI system did not get the memo that today I have Things To Do.
I kept waiting to see if I'd feel better after morning meds and a little food. Big Nope.

Argh. Back to bed with meds and something brainless to stream and fall asleep to.

A good fantasy for some; a nightmare for others. (Count me in the "good fantasy" camp, including the fantasy that I'd no longer be wildly allergic to cats.)
When I talk to comic book artists I always emphasize the importance of clearly separating their planes of depth. This rule is only for comics and does not apply to Turkish photographer Sami Uçan.

This #symptomatology #embroidery, body map (2016), is a favourite of the #MECFS community. I spent a few months freehand stitching my various neurological symptoms as I felt them, making my invisible symptoms visible. #SciArt 🧶🐡🩺🧪

Part of why people get so excited for Halloween is because it's one of the few holidays that isn't centered around family. You can just go & do your own weird thing. Embrace your inner werewolf. Howl at the moon. Chase a squirrel. Pass out in your bath tub. No one will stop you.

Weevil,
Weevil,
ROCK U!

What's not to like? Art + Puns + Rock 'n Roll!
Since I’m busily taking part in both #SciArtSeptember & #MinCup23 here’s a silly linocut with #invertebrates & a rock. 🐡

This linocut illustrates a terrible pun: 'Weevil weevil rock U' rather than "We will, we will rock you," of course. The larger weevil is the extravagant, long-necked

Healthcare workers don’t decide whether to wear gloves or sterilize equipment based on how many people are hospitalized. They just do it because it protects patients, and every patient has the right to get healthcare without becoming more sick. It should be the same with masks.
