This is completely fucking unacceptable. Shut this terrorist government down until it stops brutalizing its own citizens.
Today at 34 & Park in Minneapolis, a woman tried to drive down the street where a protest had broken out in front of a home ICE was raiding, saying she had a doctor apt to get to. ICE agents busted out her windows, cut off her seatbelt, and pulled her out before arresting her.

This poll shows that 74% of Democrats support abolishing ICE, with 53% *strongly* supporting getting rid of the agency.

Any elected Democrat who wants ICE to exist is outside the mainstream of their party and the people they purport to represent.
YouGov poll - In the future, would you support or oppose...

Eliminating ICE as a federal agency?
Support 42%
Oppose 45%

Reducing ICE’s size and funding
Support 48%
Oppose 37%

This isn't just a casual observation. Fascism scholars have long made this point. It's why calling them "weird" was a more effective strategy than talking about the prices of eggs. Fascism is an aesthetic political movement - you need to make people feel embarassed and horrified by it.
one of the most effective weapons we have against fascism is mockery, especially when its really funny
It occurs to me all the yelling at ICE in MPLS isn't merely funny. Getting made fun of like this is awful for morale. ICE is losing field officers faster than it can wave them through training, and a big part of it is how little of this these little weasels can take.

Yep. Because people actually love police alternatives - we see that in the polling and the hundreds of millions of dollars already invested in successful non police programs in more than 70 (not just blue state) cities in the U.S.
For the record, I do believe there is a stalking horse approach to taking on the police: it's not training or reform, it's taking a page out of the charter school playbook and creating police alternatives, and gradually offloading various functions of the police onto them.

One aspect of this that's come up with people pooh-poohing impeachment is the assumption that the Jan 6 impeachment was some kind of most extreme ceiling on how many Senate votes are gettable. And I think that's really underestimating how much we're barreling towards extreme crises worse than Jan 6.
I don’t see how this country survives until 2029 unless Trump is impeached and removed. This level of lawless malice is not sustainable. What fresh horrors await us this week?

semi-regular reminder that ICE was only created in 2003

when you are asked to imagine a world without ICE, you're basically being asked to remember where you were when Lilo & Stitch came out

I think it would behoove more Democrats to consistently refer to ICE as a paramilitary or secret police force to divorce what ICE/CBP are doing from any notion of immigration enforcement.

i think the public-facing message re: ICE needs to be something like “let’s pump the brakes and investigate these bad apples” and then you take power and wipe the whole thing out

This FWIW is a good example of what I am talking about. I don’t think Dan Goldman is ever going to say the words “abolish ICE” and activists should work to replace him with someone who will. But also, Goldman speaking in these terms isn’t a bad thing. It is, like I said, a good start.
Some good suggestions from @brianbeutler.bsky.social. I think Rep Daniel Goldman offers a good start at how Dems might approach this going forward here:

If I was advising the EU—and I 100% should be—my advice is that you prepare three sets of sanction packages:
1. Deliberate targeting of personal/corporate assets of Trump, Musk, Andressen, Sacks, etc like they’re Russian oligarchs by doing stuff like seizing Gigafactory Berlin. This gets used first.

This is the way and every single Democrat should be on board.

It won't get anywhere before the midterms, but it will make the midterms easier for Democrats to win and easier to take action on these promises once they do.

Be the party of accountability. Own that space, starting now.

This piece says sources are worried about "widen[ing] political fractures," but my real takeaway is that they're beginning to realize that they might not be able to avoid justice forever.
This is a fascinating document. Not so much because it provides any new detail, but because the tension between carrying water for the administration and squeamishness about gunning down random civilians is palpable, on the part of both the reporter and her sources. www.politico.com/news/2026/01...

It’s past time for Blue State governors from CA, NY, IL, MN, WA, OR, MA etc filling up fed coffers with tax revenues to have discussions on what can a “blue state compact” look like exploring practicable soft secession - ie escrow accounts for tax payers from those states.
What is the point of appropriations if the White House can just cut off spending against its enemies?

rare to see an american politician speak in these terms and it rocks

The tragic death of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year old mother fatally shot by ICE, shows that ICE can’t be reformed and must be abolished.

I’ll be introducing the Abolish ICE Act as a step toward justice, accountability, and humanity in our immigration policy.

Time to melt ICE.

Rep. @AOC: I understand that Vance believes shooting a young mother of three in the face three times is an acceptable America that he wants to live in, and I do not. That is a fundamental difference between Vance and I. I do not believe that the American people should be assassinated in the street.
