so glad the child sexual abuse panic was squarely pointed at folks like me by the people actually doing it & the public was like “yeah, seems right—freaks did it. not the men with all the money & fighting to keep child marriage legal, the women that are legal to kill in 30 states if you’re nervous.”
What a great day for finding out that a lot of things people thought were conspiracies are actually backed up by emails that are like hey pedo, let us pedo together in pedoland on the second day of the pedo month

virtue signalling is good actually
Performative decency is actually *so* important for this reason.

It tricks the 10% of ghouls into thinking that there are only 1% of ghouls.

And it makes the 30% of people that don't care one way or another follow the mostly decent crowd

It's not in this article but the government asserts that the sandwich was thrown at "point blank range", which implies subway sandwiches have defined effective weapon ranges of varying lethality, and I would like to see the government's chart of these ranges.

the thing about "still gotta win elections" is that sounds all realpolitik until you realize that avoidance lets the other guys define you in your absence and "moderating" communicates that their narrative about you is correct.
I guess this is the savvy take or whatever but as an empirical matter, it doesn't work to reinforce the narratives of your opponents. If Democrats start start saying, "immigrants are the reason crime rates are high!" they won't convince anti-immigrant voters and they'll alienate pro-immigrant voters

if a stranger asks to borrow something, and it would not ruin you to replace it, i think you should always let them

in my experience, they almost always return it. you made their day at zero cost

but if they don’t bring it back, they needed it more than you, and you helped

thats a win win to me
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

Few would ever love "reactionary" but there's a deeper refusal to accept any label because that would be conceding they are obviously just another ideological faction or political camp that can be critiqued, instead of all just the One Noble Truthteller whose opinions are simply objective reality.

It looks like the US has two major parties, one of which whole-heartedly embraces and is pushing forward with fascism, and the other exists to capture all the opposition and hold them to one side until the fascism bit is done, and then complain about it but not actually fix it. Is that how it works?

What Liberals Get Wrong About Trump's Executive Order on Antifa
Liberals dismiss antifa as just an idea. That opens up the activists, researchers, and organizers to a real risk of persecution.

I don't even know what specific thing this is in reference to, it's just. Broadly true.
"Who would have predicted this?"

- Black women did.
- Trans people did.
- The *entire* disability community did.
- The anarchists did.
- Post-Evangelicals did.

"Well why didn't I hear them."

You did. But you disregarded us as "extremists" and "alarmists". And you are still calling us that.

we're in a national crisis because everyone hates conservatives so much nobody will date them and their families refuse to talk to them; but also we're in a national crisis because our institutions are liberals who don't realize how out of touch they are with the overwhelmingly conservative public
Conservative men are apparently pretending to be liberal and then "coming out" to their progressive girlfriends after dating for months
Conservative Men keep LYING because no one will date them...

Ig I'm interested in how 'cozy' as marketing flattens the variety of ways people find comfort into one specific (often exclusionary, white) aesthetic. Marketed 'cozy' tells us we should all find the same things comforting: European villages, conflict-free narratives, particular colour palettes even!

It astonishes me how parents are perfectly able to understand "the kid brought something home from school and now we're all sick" except for COVID for some reason
Exactly, the entire argument for this narrative is that kids rarely die of COVID. That’s true, but it wasn’t the justification for the policy. Teachers *do* die of COVID and kids *do* spread COVID.

Some studies find school closures were the most effective intervention for preventing cases!
