And there it is.

Accommodation and acquiescence. Learned helplessness and preemptive surrender. Retreat and complicity.

In the midst of an unprecedented assault on the constitutional order, the nominal opposition party fails to use the one key tool in its arsenal to push back. What a disaster.
The final tally to advance the CR is 62-38.

The Democrats who voted for cloture, giving Donald Trump everything he wants:

Cortez Masto (NV)
Durbin (IL)
Fetterman (PA)
Gillibrand (NY)
Hassan (NH)
Peters (MI)
Schatz (HI)
Schumer (NY)
Shaheen (NH)

Very messed up!
we’re starting to see evidence of news outlets retroactively detransitioning contributors to their publications — as in, stories were published under correct pronouns initially but have quietly changed to misgender the authors.

If Dems were unwilling to fight over cabinet nominees and unwilling to fight over the budget/shutdown, it’s safe to assume they’re not going to fight over anything.

The rotating villains were finally selected, and here we are. 🚮
Hassan YES.

That’s it. Cloture passed by democrats to allow the CR to be enacted. Vote ongoing but the 8 Dems defected to get it across the line and it will get 60.
They are one vote short but the vote is still open.

Current YES votes cast

King
Durbin
Schatz
Cortez Masto

Still expected yes

Gillibrand
Fetterman
Schumer

They need one more fence sitter I think

And then at least nine Democratic senators immediately thereafter rubber stamped his continued dismantling of the government
it's too grim to write down but we just lived through the moment when a sitting u.s. president said in a speech at the dept of justice that he thinks news gathering has to be illegal, as covered by a far right tv network, with an ad for "angel cream" placed next to his head

the number of yeses is high enough that you should assume there is broader support in the caucus for Schumer's approach, and also that he strategically allowed some of his members facing 2026 primaries to vote no (Hickenlooper, Warner, Booker)

you have to make them prove they're on the good guy team, and the way to do that is to primary them until they break with schumer and leadership
better to pressure a "good" one who still didn't object to unanimous consent or seek to oust that entire leadership class and their consultants than to accidentally miss someone who desperately needs to be shown the door
nobody objected to unanimous consensus, and short of an outright revolt in the next few days and the deposing of schumer as minority leader, and ex-communicating of the "yes" votes, you sort of have to assume everyone was on board with this. no doubt many were not but there's no way to be sure.

this feels like a capital b Break. in any sane party system they have in any other country there would immediately be an internal challenge for power, and you'll see some primaries etc, but but the democratic party's entire apparatus exists to suppress it. it's over. party's dead stick a fork in it

chuck schumer and mitch mcconnell have the same ideology of senate leadership, which is: yes, you have to absorb some hatred and malcontent. but in return, you get to sabotage the democrats

A looming problem is my suspicion that there's no easy way to say to the rightfully extremely pissed off liberals and centrists that ~this~ is why "the left" has hated these guys [gestures at Democratic senators] so much this whole time. Many of them will read it as gloating and not an invitation.
