Old-ass trans woman from the bad old days. Work as a professional trauma dumpster. Have a dog for when I'm sad and a bsky for when I'm pissed off.

@becauselanguage.com In college I worked at a non profit in Philly that provided services to homeless youth, and noticed a grammatical variant that didn't invert after an interrogative, i.e. "how he's going to get there?" or "what I'm supposed to do about this?" It was AAVE and also seemed regional.

Can confirm. Depending on where people have recently traveled I'm doing flu tests on spec.
Flu is absolutely ripping through my clinic, anecdotally worse than last year which was also brutal - get the shot this year it’s going to get worse

This is, and has prompted, class dunking, nothing more. If you justify your policies by saying the other guy is poor and didn't go to college, I don't think you will serve the country. Period.
There’s a reason the political right wants to keep people dumb.

This feels like a containment breach. There have always been creepy "dissidents" like Daniel Everett saying that the Pirahā have a different cognitive structure, or Chagnon and Neel with their eugenics of violence; normally they get in fights at conferences and don't influence policy (hopefully)
The anti-empathy idea, that there is no cross-cultural consistency in emotions or internal experience, is either pedantry, akin to insisting we don't know if Greeks saw blue, or else wishful thinking by psychopaths.

It's a stretch to describe this as a "field"- if you ignore Boddice, the other sources are say:
1) we don't know much about the emotional experience of committing acts of violence, and
2) most experiences are interpreted -between- people through the lens of culture
...which no anthropologist denies
A common assumption is that throughout history, people have experienced the same basic range of emotions. A radical field of history now challenges this assumption, Gal Beckerman reports. theatln.tc/KD2QRX9Y

@goingmedieval.bsky.social remember when people couldn't read and lost all critical thinking facilities?

(Xenophobia and quack remedies don't just naturally arise from the primordial shape of the unlettered human brain, they are profitable to the powerful who sell them)
No one is reading long form.
The emergence of the post-literacy world is accompanied by the rise of Medieval Peasant Brain, a mental soup of superstition and magical thinking... We see this most clearly in the mainstreaming of xenophobia, conspiracies, quack medicines, and naked fascism.

We didn't survive and thrive as a species because we had warriors or hunters - pretty much every omnivore can manage that.

We did so because we developed Grandmothers, and domesticated Dogs.

Community is what defines us as a species, and every "self-reliant" libertarian shitweasel be damned.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

Making a sticker based on something @adriandaub.bsky.social said about Thomas Mann's L'Haine, that liberals in 30's Germany failed because they did not understand hatred, and responded to an existential threat with facts and argument.

One of the worst things about being an old anarchist is seeing successive generations of kids come up with the great idea to strap homemade feathered wings to their backs and jump off a building.

And you can't talk them out of it because it's different this time and they're so sincere.

It's not a question of can, it's a question of must. Some people will have an easier time, but history is full of people fleeing genocide on handmade boats or in the back of cement mixers. The sooner you start planning the less traumatic the trip will be.

There is no stay and fight, I'm sorry.
American trans people need to plan on leaving. I lost most of my family tree to fascists, this will end the same way.

North Carolina and Illinois are states and were not able to stop "such out-of-state troops being sent to patrol [their] city"
Statehood for D.C. is an ethical obligation at this point, required to protect the rights of our residents to govern ourselves against such out-of-state troops being sent to patrol our city.
NEW: Republican-led states, in a new filing at the D.C. Circuit, say D.C. residents are irrelevant, D.C. belongs to everyone else. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

The filing is led by the South Carolina and West Virginia attorneys general. Both states sent troops to DC.
