Carney: "American hegemony in particular helped provide public goods, a stable financial system... this bargain no longer works. Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition... recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as a weapon. Tariffs as leverage ... "

It's so exhausting to to be constantly told by American leaders that the defining policy of the 80 odd years during which the US became the most wealthy and powerful country in the history of the world was a grossly unfair failure for them.
US trade secretary Howard Lutnick really not mincing his words here at Davos: "We are here to make a v clear point: globalisation has failed the West and the USA. It's a failed policy. It's what the WEF has stood for, which is, export, offshore, find the cheapest labour in the world."

One point I’ve been banging on about in interviews the last few weeks is that the mere threat of the use of force by the U.S. President is illegal both under Article 2(4) of the UN Charter but also the U.S. Constitution by virtue of the Take Care Clause.

FIFA would then try to punish European nations over it, which would have the bonus side effect of showing it up for what it is, too.
What Europe could do is threaten to boycott the World Cup. It won't. But that might actually work. Trump wants his big show.

What makes this statement by Emmanuel Macron so unprecedented is, for the first time, a leading European ally is equating Trump with Putin.

“No intimidation or threat will influence us - neither in Ukraine, nor in Greenland, nor anywhere else in the world.”

EVERYTHING has changed.

In every photo I see, every time, I cannot get over the fact that they’re all wearing masks. Police don’t wear masks. Everyday soldiers don’t wear masks. Thugs, criminals and special forces (ie those from whom swift violence is expected) conceal their faces. The signal could not be clearer.
Stunning photos from Minneapolis, including this one by John Locher for the Associated Press. www.theatlantic.com/photography/...

If the figures we're getting out of Iran are in the right league, this weekend was, I think, one of the bloodiest state crackdowns of all time. People are talking 12,000-20,000 dead; for comparison Hungary in 1956 was about 2,500, Tiananmen - across country, in multiple cities - probably 1000+

The people of Minnesota are sending their tax money to the federal government and in turn the federal government has cut them off from funding and sent armed goons to terrorize their cities. I'm not sure what else to call this

Greenland PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen:

"If we have to choose between the US & Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark. We choose NATO. We choose the Kingdom of Denmark. We choose the EU."

"Greenland does not want to be owned by the US. Greenland does not want to be governed by the US" he later added.

I don’t think people realise how awful it is in Ukraine right now. Yesterday my friend posted how it’s -9 and because of the power cuts - due to Russian attacks - she has no heating. This is in Kyiv. And this is the day after a mass missile & drone strike killed four people.

This isn't getting enough attention in Western media: Ukraine is effectively imposing a civil aviation blockade on the most populous part of fascist Russia ahead of the Orthodox Christmas (Jan. 7) holiday.

Trump announcing to the world that the US will only let a puppet take over Venezuela.
FOX & FRIENDS: What do you think is next for the Venezuelan people now that you have removed Maduro so he can face American justice?

TRUMP: Well, we're making that decision now. We can't take a chance on letting somebody else run it, just take over where he left off. So we're making that decision

Does Congress have any red line where they constrain Trump? He just unilaterally went to war against Venezuela. (Spare me any technicalities; we literally attacked them and kidnapped their president. That is effectively a declaration of war and he doesn’t have to put it on a scroll of parchment)

Can't help but feel like this is one of the reasons why the Constitution says If a dude in office does an insurrection, don't let that motherfucker hold office again

Bc clearly they cannot be trusted with power & control over the levers of government, & they do not care about democratic constraints
