My father-in-law is a Democratic governor. It is difficult to get his attention in a magnificent bill because he is lost in wonder. We were in a treasury together years ago and I asked him what it would cost to raise taxes today. I will never forget his answer… 'We can’t, we don’t know how to do it'
Cutting property taxes for Oregonians affected by wildfires. Canceling planned freeway tolls. Pausing local new taxes in the Portland area. We have to keep going to make life more affordable for Oregonians.

you know what kills off Main Street? everybody having to drive 20 minutes to get there
The answer to the first question is "reviving the Main Street of their small town definitely means encouraging housing density and transit"
I don’t always agree with of the broader political takes from some “abundance”-coded pundits but man the abundance critics are just pure nonsense merchants

like, what’s this guy’s deal? literally making up a guy to dunk on the idea that cities should build more housing and transit.

really telling that bari weiss after all this time masquerading as a centrist immediately signs up to be political commissar for rabidly antisemitic fascists. also telling that the times' management intentionally made her invulnerable, because they share her beliefs.

You don’t need a degree in political science to understand why Trump and Putin want Canada and Greenland. This image should scare the fuck out of anyone who still doesn’t believe Russia’s war on Ukraine is an existential threat to democracy.

A lot of well-meaning progressives on this site have been funding slavery in Myanmar and Cambodia in the unshakable conviction that every dollar they give is instantly being translated into food magically making its way past a military blockade by the most competent armed force in the Middle East.
I just assume any accounts doing that are probably Myanmar forced labor scammers and instablock, and it's depressing that people haven't figured out that nobody legit is spamming people that way

well yeah, more than anything what happened to small-c conservatism was that its strongest adherents looked to the caricatures of greedy businessmen in media aspirationally. but like, anyone claiming any knowledge of socialism should understand why charity doesn't work
Because when you marshal the facts of:
1. Capra was a staunch anti-New Deal conservative
2. He still portrayed Potter as a fucking monster
3. Right-wingers *today* straight up think Potter was the good guy

...it flies in the face of everything we've been saying about conservatism since 1981.

The "Larry Summers complained to Jeffrey Epstein that MeToo went too far" and "Olivia Nuzzi committed crimes on behalf of the fascist she masturbated with while reporting on him" are the same story: American elites have no ideology other than "I should be untouchable." Society is run by empty husks

What does Harvard, our greatest learning institution allegedly, mean? Nothing, apparently! It produced John Roberts and is now bending the knee. What does the American civic religion of democracy mean? Nothing, apparently! The last election was an installation and now we all answer to King Pederast.

Summers/Epstein + Nuzzi/RFK/Lizza has done more than anything else to help me understand why elites have capitulated to fascism while normal ppl haven't. After decades of hot air from elites/their institutions about freedom, democracy, equality etc, they reveal they have no beliefs or morals at all

yes reasonable and fair to wait until we have more information to talk about any motive. no not necessary to wait until we have more information to blame the president and the governors who illegally put national guard where they didn't belong to harass and terrorize their political enemies for show

i don't get how people watched zohran's campaign and got the impression that he was anything but a massive YIMBY
I mostly stay off twitter but I occasionally go back because all the left NIMBYs stayed. The complete copefest going on over Mamdani putting YIMBYs on his housing transition team has been chicken noodle soup for the soul.

yeah it’s bad that Lizza has been sitting on this for so long but also how cursory and inept was that Vox investigation that not only managed to miss the biggest scandal in the history of American political journalism but affirmatively exonerated her bsky.app/profile/bkel...
So the editor of New York Magazine said there was no bias or ethical problems with Olivia's articles?

Does he still think that?

They should retract all of her stories
