think it's nice that all handbag manufacturers got together one day and collectively agreed that women only ever leave the house needing to carry either one single cigarette or an entire human man, it absolutely chimes in with how I live my life day-to-day

I'm not sure the best way to handle Trump's threats is for Starmer to repeatedly state that the prosperity of the UK - and pursuing peace/end of violence in Ukraine and Gaza - is dependent on the USA. That's just telling Trump he has all the leverage in this situation.

‘Defecting to the reform party’ is a polite euphemism for telling guests at a dinner party that you need to go for a poo.

“I’d love to hear all about your holiday in Sardinia but first I just need to defect to the reform party”

Damien Egan is a vice chair of Labour Friends of Israel - the pertinent reason for the planned pro-Palestine protest - but for some reason many of the headlines and prominent text of the articles focus on his Jewish faith. Seems like bad journalism to me 🤷‍♂️

Jenrick defection probably the dumbest thing he could have done. He could have been the top race science guy in the tory party, but now he's going to be a run-of-the-mill race science guy who needs to impress guys who believe a secret sect of Brown people control the traffic lights

Although this feels weird at first glance, it's believable after a few moments of thought: there is a socially conservative (and anti-immigration) "green" contingent that is primarily concerned with an unchanging rural idyll of village greens and farmland.

Can't believe this nugget seems to think that a valid reason for the USA to invade Greenland is that the USA could raise their GDP. How about you ask Greenland what they want first, or have you abandoned any pretence at democracy and a people's right to decide their own fate?!

£63m for a 5 year contract, presumably covering all BBC sites in the UK; given the vast quantity of shows the BBC creates, the number of guests who'd require private transport and the staff who'd need v. early/late hours transport (usual for businesses to do this)... this doesn't seem extravagant 🤷‍♂️

If the UK wanted to suppress free speech they would demand that everyone entering the country would have to divulge 5 years worth of social media history.

When you are the incumbent government, your re-election strategy is downstream of your governing record, which is what you should be preoccupied with now.

Running a country well is an impossibly difficult job. You need intelligence, economic literacy, the ability to inspire and the humility to listen. Nobody truly gets it right, and most are considered failures.

Who thinks the answer to this conundrum is to elect the absolute worst of humanity?

If you only think about car clubs as a way of making money you may conclude they are “an evolutionary dead end”, but if you account for a fraction of the societal good (less congestion/parking stress) of reducing car use and ownership, you might instead conclude the model still has legs?

Whenever I see this sort of thing, I'm always curious if those asked actually cast their vote in past elections (if they were eligible to).
It is terrifying though, personally, that the most vocally racist, anti-immigrant, "traditionalist"/anti LGBT+ parties are top of this poll.
Westminster Voting Intention:

RFM: 27% (+12)
CON: 21% (-3)
LAB: 18% (-17)
LDM: 15% (+3)
GRN: 13% (+6)

The one that boils my piss is "'can I make matcha pancakes?', 'yes, here are some recipes'" 1. That's just a websearch and 2. As anybody who's searched online recipes will know, you'll likely need to cross-reference other sources, because many online recipes are poorly edited and inaccurate.
There’s a type of LLM advert which essentially depicts
1) a person using an LLM for a task it absolutely can perform
2) but a person who is qualified to double check its working wouldn’t need to.
Feels like this is the type of “AI misalignment” we should really worry about!

Interesting BBC Rare Earth episode about wildlife in urban areas. I felt a kinship with the expert who differentiates between urban spaces supporting animals thanks to human food waste versus more "rewilded" urban spaces...

I've seen people complain that Picturehouse sent out a personalised Year in Review for 2024... well, mine doesn't include any personalisation. I'm happy that Picturehouse notes that I watched films, and that time is measured in hours.

It's weird when somebody almost exactly describes your circumstances in an offhand comment, isn't it? 😄
Us zone 2, 2 bed/350K property dwellers do exist - however mythic we may sound.
Don't believe people who tell you shit like the cheapest place in London is a million quid. London is RIDICULOUSLY expensive, we know this, there isn't a need to exaggerate. You can get a 2-bed flat in zone 2 for £350k, it's possible. "THAT'S INSANE" yeah it's not a million quid though is it, mush
