Good Morning ☀️ Bluesky

Went to Bombay Hook NWR yesterday. Finally got to see the Northern Harrier somewhat close. Two years of repeat visits 😁

43 years ago today, Sidney Lumet & David Mamet delivered the ultimate courtroom drama masterclass, THE VERDICT (1982), starring Paul Newman.

Celebrate its anniversary and dive deep into its brilliance:

Danger Rug, Danger Rug, Nuthin's Stranger'n Danger Rug! 🦈🦈🦈
The Tasselled Wobbegong is a master of disguise that can eat a fish almost as big as itself in one gulp. It's classified as a shark, but when it lays on the sea floor it looks like a harmless rug if you manage to see it. But with powerful jaws and sharp teeth they are no fish to mess with.

It was very naive how many STEM people thought Republicans would stop at the humanities
Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.

I'll say again: we are oddly selective about the government services about which we will say, they operate at a loss.

We say Amtrak and the post office "lose money" but we never say highways, the court system, the Pentagon, etc lose money
The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

This tree looks like it belongs in a fairy tale. It's an Amur maple (potentially invasive in some places). I don't know what's going on with that remarkable bark (can a tree have that many galls?).

Passages: Artists in Solidarity with Immigrants, Refugees, and Asylum Seekers

A compilation by Western Vinyl, the artists wrote and recorded these songs in gratitude for and protection of that same place. Home, as we know it, is at risk.

I’m hunting for more videos of a small room performance by Julian Lage and Bill Frisell, and a very sweet track with Gyan Riley shows up, and John Zorn is mentioned. A commenter says he’s been listening to the albums, Which I’ve Never Heard Of! “Teresa de Ávila!” Zorn. Go. Listen! Be well. 😊

A friend with a new baby asked guests to mask in order to hold her baby. A relative refused to mask & broke down in tears about her "restrictions"

As a reminder, babies <6 months have the 2nd highest hospitalization rate from Covid after adults 75+ & are too young to be vaxxed
