💥 “It’s not clear who attacked whom,” Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán said today at a presser on the Russia–Ukraine war, after an EU summit where he opposed any financial help for Ukraine.

Orbán is now clearly escalating his rhetoric, for the first time openly questioning that Russia started the war.

In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites.

He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him.

I'm searching Getty Images and found some photos credited to the Boston Herald that redact the faces of ICE/federal agents. They don't redact the face of the guy they're arresting.

I'm curious about the ethics of doing this. I don't think I've ever seen this on Getty before.

According to the head of the intelligence service, smaller countries are now facing a world where there is more "law of the jungle than rules-based world order." We see 3 major military powers, the US, Russia and China, in their different ways do not support rules-based order.

The report states the US is now using "its economic & technological strength as a tool of power, even against allies & partners. DC no longer rules out military measures even against partners.

This is accurate. Russia has succeeded very well in convincing media in Europe and the UK that the conflict is far more one-sided in Russia’s favour than is genuinely the case - and that contributes to the assumption that it should be settled in Russia’s favour sooner rather than later.
One of the frustrating aspects of Trump's 'peace' efforts is that he resides in an echo chamber that doesn't acknowledge the real difficulties that Russia is facing in continuing its war in Ukraine - and it is an echo chamber that influences media coverage, judging by the questions that I get asked!
Time is not working for Russia, and things will only get worse.

“Putin is very likely preparing to attempt to offset Russia’s near-exhaustion of voluntary recruitment in 2026 by mobilizing elements of Russia’s strategic reserve to sustain combat operations in Ukraine.”

This. Europeans know they need the EU and trust it because it is actually highly functioning.

The American business complaint is that it passes laws! It can be hard for it to do big new things that require unanimity. But where it has authority/power, it does stuff!

The Trump administration wants to help “its political allies” on the far Right “restore their former greatness.” Just a reminder that the last time that they were in power across the continent was the 1930s & 40s. Tucker Carlson notwithstanding, I maintain that that period wasn’t all that great.
