Got this from my brother for Christmas. Fancy Blackwing pencils should go well with my fountain pens.

this is a great article
I wrote much less this year than I've written in the past five, so there's not a whole lot to revisit. This piece, though, I still think is probably the best article I've ever written, even if it was a dumb professional move to write it [free to read] www.patreon.com/posts/empero...

No!

Most presidents do not in fact name anything after themselves while they’re in office, because they’re not toddlers who constantly need to be the center of attention.
Has any other president named this much stuff after himself?

Pretty funny that they have to post security to keep people off the plaza outside the Cologne Philharmonic Hall because if people walk on it they will create noise and disturb the show. Looks nice but apparently not great architecture.

The New Republic wrote a hit piece on me in 2017 because I wrote this 2016 article on Trump. They now wonder why women who sounded the autocracy alarm early were mass harassed. It's because of them and rags like them.

Shapiro is annoyed about podcasters trafficking in conspiracy for the same reason Burger King gets annoyed when a McDonalds is built across the street
Ben Shapiro: "Today I want to talk about something even more important — how to discern those attempting to speak truth from frauds and grifters…The conservative movement is in danger from charlatans who claim to speak in the name of principle but actually traffic in conspiracy and dishonesty."

Why doesn’t Gremlins seem to make any of the Christmas movie lists? Obviously Gremlins 2 is a New Year’s Eve movie, but Gremlins is definitely a Christmas movie.

very grimly ironic that our government run by podcasters sucks at true crime
Gotta say it's mindblowing to me that the Brown shooter is still at large and they don't even seem to have identified who they're looking for.

It would be interesting to know how many people cancel their Evernote accounts this month. The latest price increase was the last straw for me. I’m a casual user and pay over $200 for something that I can get for free with Apple Notes is ridiculous. Hope they have a user base that needs them.

The ACA isn't just "health care for people who don't have a conventional employer." It also disallows something that was incredibly common 20 years ago, which I fear is getting lost to generational memory: insurance companies could deny you health care for essentially any previous health problem.
I'm dubious about Amazon's commitment to keeping pre-existing conditions a thing of the past.

This is actually a good example of why the customer model is wrong.

I wouldn't have chosen poetry writing, but UNC made me take a class. And it absolutely made me become a much better writer, with an eye to concision and an ear now trained to the rhythm of words. I'm a better historian as a result.
If you are providing me with an education that is low utility in the world then it’s a disservice. My composition class spent four weeks on poetry. I’m sorry, but that only would’ve been useful if I wanted to be a poet. I don’t need to know iambic pentameter in order to be a victim advocate.

without birthright citizenship in the united states, you don't have a democracy and you don't have rule of law.

revoking birthright citizenship gives fascists free rein to purge the country of literally anyone they don't like. it opens the door to atrocities and mass murder. i am not exaggerating.
