This is 10th-grader Arnoldo Bazan.

A citizen.

Immigration agents grabbed him and put him in a chokehold.

"We're from the United States bro!' he screamed.

Agents took and sold his phone

And when he finally got home hours later, his shirt was ripped, he neck had angry, red welts, and he sobbed.

i don't know if this is directly related to doge firing all the website people who told them to stop doing recklessly stupid and illegal data harvesting schemes with government systems... but i don't NOT know if it's directly related to this either

That first photo is a gut punch. A bunch of heavily armed goons too scared to show their faces bullying a scared kid with the full force of the federal government behind them.
A teenage boy was walking home in Minneapolis yesterday when four masked men jumped out of a van & questioned him - with no parent or guardian present.

He was bundled into the van & taken away.

Bystanders heard the boy say: “Can I just go home?”

I don’t know how America comes back from all this.

It's impossible to comply with these goons, they tell her to go, she starts to go....and then the guy runs up and smashes the window and they all surround her and drag her out. Criminals doing carjackings are more organized than this
Today at 34 & Park in Minneapolis, a woman tried to drive down the street where a protest had broken out in front of a home ICE was raiding, saying she had a doctor apt to get to. ICE agents busted out her windows, cut off her seatbelt, and pulled her out before arresting her.

Fine-particulate and ozone air pollution from fossil fuels causes 4-6 million avoidable deaths per year: 7-10% of all deaths worldwide. At an ~$11 million statistical value of life, this is a 44-66 trillion $/yr (38-56% of ~117 T$/yr global GDP) cost that appears nowhere in fossil fuel economics.

It's really as simple as the guys with the potential to do (and who are doing) the most harm need to have proportionate consequences for misusing their power.

(Of course the powerful people don't want to divest themselves of authority, which is how we got here.)
This is possibly the most important thing I’ve read in a year. Be prepared to give it some mental bandwidth.
“If our authorities exist for the protection of the people, then the laws should exist for the protection of the people, not the protection of authorities.
Let me give you a thought experiment:

Imagine not just a ban on qualified immunity for authority, but a reversal; a new legal framework, under which authority bears greater responsibility than civilians in matters involving force—as it should.

People who aren't in Minnesota might not know that if you drive or walk past pretty much any school, there's going to be a group of people, parents and childless, standing guard to make sure the kids are safe from feds. It's pretty remarkable. And very disturbing. www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...

This is something acutely aware of as a think tank guy. We aren't generally cooking up new stuff in the lab (except rube-goldberg devices to get around our 1000 veto points). We already know what we need to do and have the resources to do. These really aren't policy problems
If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:

America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.

What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. 🧵

The leading cause of death for ICE agents is COVID-19?

That’s not good for people getting arrested by ICE!
ice is big on spreading Covid — this is one more reason to mask up in a respirator. You can get Covid outside if it’s crowded.
The leading cause of death by far among ICE officers is COVID-19.

It's almost like AI is the cart before the horse that is needed to rationalize the continued propping up of fossil fuel infrastructure. I wonder why all the most powerful people in this country would want that? 🤔

Couple thoughts on the discourse du jour:

1) You don't start negotiations from a point that is close to where you think you will end up unless you want to cede more than you're letting on.

2) You don't advocate for taking a step back when you have momentum unless you want to waste the momentum.

America is now at the heavily armed secret police doing warrantless door-to-door house raids in search of undesirable ethnicities and/or political dissenters stage. The difference from well known historical cases is down to scale.
A video of ICE agents conducting door-to-door searches today in Minneapolis

The homeowner requests a warrant repeatedly, is told they don't require one, then is told they're getting it, then the agents storm in anyway

They also point a taser at her to try and disrupt filming
