just saw someone sincerely arguing that they need AI bc they don't have "natural" artistic talent and idk how to make you understand that nobody comes by this shit naturally. it's just...work. it's being bad at it for a really, really, really long time. it's intention, pursued over time! wtf!!!

I keep catching strays from "technology is neutral" people, so let's set things straight.

1) Technology is not neutral, especially the subset of technology called "algorithms"
2) The form-factor that makes a technology into a tool is not neutral
3) How tools are productized is not neutral

Here's my piece on the end of the McBarge.

If you're feeling insecure about your book's premise today, remember that someone really walked into a pitch meeting and said, "Hear me out -- it's Hamlet . . . but with lions."

I would like to speak up today for the trans community.

You see, I know a bit of what it’s like to be politically scapegoated. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, suddenly anyone in America who had any amount of Japanese ancestry became suspect. Politicians preyed upon ignorance and fear. /1

OKAY by special request, here comes the encore performance of How Hans Christian Andersen Was a Bisexual Disaster.
Telling the full wild story of why Hans Christian Andersen wrote The Little Mermaid for a guy who kept desperately trying to ignore/rebuff his advances without making it weird and wrote about how HCA kept making it weird in his diary.
I have a game. What were you "known" for on Twitter?

I'll go first. I'm the woman who caused Dave Ramsey to mass-block Royals Twitter.

Being alive in the face of everything today is so punk rock, man. The people that make art in the face of despair are incredible and so are the people trying to do good and make a difference even when things are so hard. Thanks for helping us all not give up I love you

#MinCup24 R5M1: #Rhodochrosite versus #Kyanite

Rhodochrosite, aka Rosa del Inca & Raspberry Spar is a distinctive pink-to-red carbonate that is a mix of utility and charm. Kyanite, while famous for being blue, can be a wide variety of colours, often zoned & sometimes pleochroic.

Been feeling this so much lately. The spaces between things are bleeding together. The memories from one day to the next. All of it just feels muddled. I (we all probably) need real downtime, without the looming threat of "what's next" or (too often) "oh god what now"
Like this - the full disc metaphor seems right. I often refer to down time as defragmentation which, thinking about it, is super era-specific geekery www.nytimes.com/2024/09/28/b...
