I’m actually from a tiny (<2000) town in semi-rural PA where the biggest employer when I was growing up was the state prison. So I can speak to this one with a lot more authority than this author. It’s got almost *zero* to do with abstractions like their “ way of life”. I can tell you what they say…
This from @jdcivicscience.bsky.social nails why small town, red America is not turning on Trump.

US administration would be wise to learn from the EU's past experience (I'm not expecting they will) of offering economic benefits to Russia in the hope of solving strategic disagreements. Russia won't give up its geopolitical goals in exchange for economic partnership with US (or Europe).
⚡️Economic partnership with US could spur Russia to end war, White House says.

"There is an incentive for Russia to end this war and perhaps that could be economic partnerships with the United States," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on April 15.

Fundamentally the real problem in comparisons (if one gets past such complicated issues to the American mind as "exchange rates) is that measuring how much you pay in taxes is easy, but the market value for the quality of public services you get in return is not

people on the other site are doing "is living in denmark better than living in the us" discourse based on that one paper about wealth and mortality and all reasonable interpretations aside, if your metric of wellbeing says that living in mississippi is better than denmark then it's a stupid metric

This! I’ve never seen this many people in the streets in this many places in the U.S. in my lifetime. It’s inspiring, dammit.
people being in the streets means something. never let your cynicism convince you otherwise.

It’s worth noting that Nazi death camps were primarily in Poland, not Germany.
When human rights advocates in El Salvador say Trump likes their prison system because it’s a “judicial black hole,” this is what they mean.

The Trump admin has partnered with Bukele to create a new Guantanamo even more removed from American rule of law.

Markets check: everything is getting killed. US futures are down over 3%, high yield spreads are blowing out, crude is down almost 6% (thanks to OPEC+ for adding more supply than expected this AM), dollar down 1.5%, yield curve bull-steepening. Full-blown recession pricing for the US across assets.

The techy but important point: most forecasts assumed that the dollar would strength as tariffs were imposed, partially offsetting the price shock. Instead a falling dollar is - possibly - going to magnify them.
End result = more pain for American consumers & firms.

Normally when a country does something utterly self-defeating, its currency loses value.
Historically that has not been the case with the US. But the dollar is falling. Making America Normal Again.

“Banning far right politicians doesn’t fix the grievances driving people to the far right!”

That’s true, but OTOH banning corrupt politicians of whatever ideological stripe does feel like an important part of fixing faith in democracy in the end

The White House says that, following talks with Russia, "the US will help restore Russia’s access to the world market for agricultural and fertilizer exports"

Perhaps the most concise way to think about this is that Musk has pranced around bragging about cracking down on fraud and abuse, finding the bad guys. Meanwhile what he's actually done is enable perhaps the biggest splurge of fraud and tax cheating in history. For him and his pals.
So look at that. DOGE has cost the US Treasury fucking half a trillion dollars. HALF A TRILLION DOLLARS. This is your cost savings.
To review what we from @washingtonpost.com are reporting out of the IRS today:

- Projected tax revenue this year is down 10% ($500 billion) as Trump's downsizing is emboldening tax cheats

- IRS is nearing an agreement with ICE to assist on mass deportations

Breathtaking indictment of US politics and society. Fall of the Soviet Union-level stuff. A little push, and the entire edifice just collapses, like a Potemkin village in the wind. Trump is doing in months what took countries with 'weaker institutions' years to get to (TUR, HUN), if at all (POL).

I’m in this post and i don’t like it
recently chatted to a friend who moves in Those Circles in the US but isn't American despite living there and she truly is losing her entire mind at their collectie complacency, kept telling me she just felt insane, as a European, watching people just completely fail to panic
It's impressive how like every elite in America is badly misreading things

If he’s just stupid and gullible: that’s why you don’t pick a real estate mafioso as your diplomat. If he’s cynically playing the play that drumpf layed out — well, that’s why you don’t fucking elect a real estate mafioso as the POTUS.
Really instructive how Witkoff is 100% certain that Putin is not interested in the rest of Ukraine, let alone Europe, which is obviously not what Putin himself is saying.

Damn i keep getting told that American civil society will eventually show up but everyone with the power to show up is politely declining, odd.
Tonight, hours after the Paul Weiss news broke, an associate at Skadden Arps sent a firm-wide email:

"Please consider this email my two week notice, revocable if the firm comes up with a satisfactory response to the current moment...We do not have time. It is now or it is never..."

i do not know how else to communicate that just because it's incredibly stupid does not mean that the power grab cannot work. "it's/he's so stupid, it will never work" has been the cope since 2016.
