Finished up this delightful book nook build that spouse got me for Xmas. It was soothing blend of Lego building and puzzle making that I found extremely satisfying, promoting extreme focus and deep work that magically settled anxiety. Now I understand the "old people working on puzzles" stereotype.

I hadn’t intended to send another newsletter in 2025, but I got to thinking about New Year’s and ended up compiling a set of quotes about the holiday. I hope yours is restful. Mine will end at 10.
Issue 9: A holiday that is predicated on staying up two hours past my bedtime is no holiday for me, but here we are.
It was that prolonged, flat, cheerless week that follows Christmas. My own existence seemed infinitely stagnant, relieved only by work on another book. Those interminable latter days of the dying year...

My brother’s sitting with a friend at a window table in a pub in Oxford.
Friend says “Was that Brian Blessed in the street?”
And then, right by the window:
“YES IT’S ME, BRIAN BLESSED! BWAH HA HA HA!”. And then RAN away.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

To be clear, we aren’t a jet because we are better than Denmark. We are a jet because we must use complex networks to compensate for a fragmented health care system.

Opinion | The U.S. vaccine schedule is a jet engine. Denmark’s is a toy plane.
Replacing the U.S. vaccine schedule with one like Denmark’s would be negligence.

The most important post on Bluesky today
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Get your flu shot please! With my immune system working again I am trying to make this the first winter in ages where I do not get the death flu
NY is having a bad flu season. More hospitalizations last week than any week on record.

Health authorities are encouraging everyone aged 6mo+ to get the flu vax (it's not too late).

Find a provider here: on.nyc.gov/getvaccinated. You can filter for sites where there's no cost for the uninsured.

I have worn a mask in public for over 5 years. My husband has had profound, life-changing long Covid for over 4 years, and now our kid does as well. I can’t imagine I will stop masking unless their circumstances change. And for what it’s worth I haven’t had even a cold for the last four+ years.
always strange to talk about but when i see everyone around me accepting sickness when i have been doing just one thing different while attending movies parties bars concerts flights…….i feel morally obligated to occasionally mention that wearing a mask has been a game changer. simple as that

The Lord of The Rings movies were rated PG-13. By current rules that means that each film could contain one use of the word "Fuck". Which line are you altering to insert the most useful swear word?

"I can't carry it for you, but I can Fucking carry you"

Honestly, nearly none? I'd rather see new ideas, in adaptation or originally written for the screen, than remakes. That said, if one must have remakes, I'd do the ones where the initial movie had a cool concept, not perfectly executed for whatever reason (time/money/effects/studio interference/etc).
Mind running with the last bit of that, O film critic turned novelist, and giving us your list of films you'd especially appreciate seeing remade?
