The democrats are currently trying to reward big tech and permanently entrench its power by pushing horrific mass surveillance and censorship laws under the guise of “cracking down on big tech” and “kids online safety.” DO NOT LET THEM TRICK YOU!!
As many have pointed out, there's no reason for big tech to change its behavior because they correctly understand that they have nothing to fear from Democrats taking power

Need to be clear - she was not saying this as a way to argue against something urgent being done about Grok (it wasn’t ‘guns don’t kill ppl’). The tech that allowed this needs disabling. BUT the men who designed, trained and used the tech need to be held accountable for their actions, too.
Just heard an AI ethicist talk about how important it is that we say ‘MEN are using Grok to undress images of babies, children and women’ not ‘Grok is….’. Grok isn’t responsible for the action, the men enabling & using it for this repulsive purpose are. Small but important bit of linguistic accuracy

Stop the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA)
KOSA is back, as are 18 “safety” bills. They must be stopped. They expose us to data breaches.
The EFF has built a resource hub buff.ly/spw61k0 to educate against this surveillance.
Tell MOC NO on KOSA & the 18-bill “safety” package. buff.ly/dLxAO9y

In case anyone else saw this and got scared, 80% of this post is misinterpreted law and massive fear mongering. The AI training thing is real tho, so you should definitely leave twitter, but the rest of this is completely normal legal stuff that gets misinterpreted every year by non-lawyers.

Now, before everybody panics and runs around like headless chickens, they have yet to introduce the bill, and Graham and Whitehouse have tried to pass this before and failed. The previous versions have never made it past the introduction stage.
Sen. WHITEHOUSE: We finally are moving to file a bipartisan Section 230 repeal bill. Waiting any longer serves no useful purpose.

Just saying if you're on Bluesky ranting at queer folk for not voting for Harris rather than writing letters to your congressman about KOSA, then you don't value queer expression at all

If you're doing both then you're very strange and should pick a lane

your representatives. Tell them no to KOSA, no to the SCREEN Act and no to changing Section 230. We cannot have these ID requirements and censorship laws. This is worse than the Patriot Act, it’s the most draconian anti-speech law since the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798.

Bad news is KOSA passed committee.

The good news is there was more opposition than expected.

Pressure works. Keep calling. Keep emailing.
KOSA is back along with 17 other dangerous censorship and surveillance laws that congress is trying to ram through.

CALL UR REPRESENTATIVE TODAY AND TELL THEM

—no KOSA
—do not repeal Section 230
—no online digital ID laws
—no age verification laws

CALL NOW!!!! We are about to lose the internet

Old people have zero ideas when it comes to how to regulate emerging technology for young people other than "turn it off"

Same shit as video games in the 80s and 90s
Same shit as TV before that
Same shit as film before that

That's always the solution: "kill it."

Seems not to be the final vote, more a checkpoint. But call anyways. You will receive a call that upon answering, routes you to representatives. Doesn't take long. The people on the other end of the line are patient, and worst case, you leave a message
TOMORROW: Congress is pushing through a package of bills which include an online ID check mandate that would fence off the internet & kill anonymity online.

Welp, they're back. Legislators say tomorrow they'll begin the mark-up proposal and try to push them out of committee.
