the faux-AI evangelists see the artistic process as a race to get to a finished product, instead of something valuable in itself. the process is where you develop those skills you don't have yet, it cannot be skipped, it is where the art happens

The latest patch for the disastrous Online Safety Act? A "nudity blocker" installed on all UK devices.

The OSA was supposed to protect kids online, but was so vaguely defined and unenforceable that the UK keeps inventing new, ever more invasive tools, like "nudity filters" and VPN bans as cover.
UK Wants All iPhones to Block Explicit Images Unless You Prove Age
Apple and Google will soon be "encouraged" to build nudity-detection algorithms into their software by default, as part of the UK government's strategy to tackle violence against women and girls, repo...

Wrote about how the late, great Rob Reiner had the most impossible 7-movie beginning to any director's career, and yet that's not even what he was most famous for:

The average person lived to be about 50-60 hundreds of years ago. The reason everyone fixates on the average human lifespan being 30 or 40 is because of the infant mortality rate. Half the kids didn't make it past 5; it dragged the lifespan average THAT far down.

Vaccinate your kids.

One of my all-time favorite clips of Rob Reiner, from his Friars Club Roast in 2000, as he reads aloud Roger Ebert's infamous scathing review of his movie North. The man had an amazing sense of humor about himself. RIP.

When I decided to watch the Castle Rock Entertainment filmography back at the top of 2024 it began as an excuse revisit the films of my favorite director Rob Reiner, but it soon evolved into an exploration of how his creative fingerprints covered the company’s entire approach to filmmaking.
Over the course of the year I’ve been watching all 93 titles in the Castle Rock Entertainment filmography and sharing my thoughts on them in this thread. Follow along as I take a nostalgic trip around the lighthouse.

Reiner's THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT is legit one of my favorite films of all time. It's a film I would put on when I worked in video stores and can, to this day, quote line for line as I sit and watch it. It won't make most people's Reiner top 5, but it is far & away my favorite of his ASTOUNDING career

Hollywood has to wake up tomorrow and just go back to work like nothing fucking happened. I don't know that there's a person in the industry who hasn't been influenced by Reiner's work. Tomorrow is an industry day of mourning, pure and simple. It's all any of us are going to be talking about.

The cultural impact of Rob Reiner cannot be understated. Legend isn't big enough a word. It goes to 11. You can't handle the truth. As you wish. I'll have what she's having. I'm your number one fan. You guys wanna see a dead body? The very idea of a bucket list. The West Wing.

All from his movies.

When Rob Reiner was on his all-time epic run at the start of his career, he had an opportunity to read a script that was looking for a production partner, and he lost his mind for it. He decided Castle Rock had to have it, no matter what.

Rob Reiner, for a while there, was one of the most artistically and commercially successful directors in Hollywood. He had a run of films that knocked the roof off. With STAND BY ME, he gave voice to Stephen King’s work that we hadn’t seen since CARRIE and SALEM’S LOT and rarely since.
