RE Larian and GenAI: now that we know the physical impact of LLMs and the data centers they require to run, even if trained off in-house data, there is still NO ethical way to use GenAI

I've not yapped about it but it is really fucking insane that we spent the summer fighting against paypros for our right to buy a videogame with a penis in it

and another megacorp is currently just creating terabytes of CP openly and proudly and working with paypros to do it

A nuance I feel is being somewhat lost in discussion around Larian's use or non-use of genAI is that the way Swen is talking here bears all the hallmarks of a CEO who does not realize that his employees have been Handling him in the way employees have always Handled dumbfuck top-down directives

I don't think I've ever seen someone fumble this much good will before. Larian was like THE golden child after BG3. They basically had a golden ticket for whatever they released next to be successful.

Then this dude fucks it by saying this shit. Like it's true what they say. There are no good CEOs

Disappointed, but not surprised (and I'm not buying Divinity after this).
Larian CEO says Divinity could have gen AI assets in it but only if the tools are trained on the studio's own data.

"If we use a GenAI model to create in-game assets, then it'll be trained on data we own."

we live in a society where it's just kind of casually accepted that advertisements, politicians, cops, textbooks, etc. are going to constantly lie to you and it's on you if you can't keep up. that's not how it works. trying to live like that leads us directly to where we are now.

My whole life, advocating war has been fed to me as “the adult position,” akin to drinking your coffee black or reading the business section of the newspaper. Let’s be very clear — war is the childish nonsense of impulsive destructive idiots playing baby-brained video games with real human lives.

I loved this. And I want to note the whole “there were no autistic people before …” discourse has an answer here: just the people were sent away in the incarceration (yes “care homes” like this), and if they fled, they were just abandoned by society, usually to die.

Ideas are not a resource that the games industry needs generated. You cannot shoot a nerf gun into a studio and miss someone without a thousand great ideas. It's never been a problem for any of us. Just ask us.

Fuck sake you evil bastards just admit you don't want to pay for staff.

letting networked software, the specific thing whose authoritarian tendencies cyberpunk warns us about, take over the term tech or technology does cause issues
i often wonder the extent to which "tech" being used as a metonym for "information technology" specifically makes it harder to see this

like there *is* technology in the world that isn't information technology (per se) and it doesn't behave (exactly) like this
Tech isn't about innovation, it's about power and networking chokepoints for power. You can innovate all you want, if you don't control or neutralise existing chokepoints your innovation will almost certainly fail to garner any real market success.

Silicon Valley is about moats not research.

I will remind folks those images of Nazi book burnings aren't burning just any books. They're burning the library of Magnus Hirschfeld; a gay, Jewish doctor who created an institute dedicated to LGBTQ sex education and healthcare. And a man who pioneered gender affirming care surgeries.

the other wrinkle in all these "we're banning porn for UK users!" and "bluesky isn't available in mississippi" stories that no one seems to be talking about:
geo-ip is inaccurate as shit, even before VPNs get involved. you can't just detect where people are with any kind of consistency

Not sharebait.

I COULD NOT believe my luck.

Last year I had seen the chicks about 3 weeks later, I was determined to get them younger, and this one DID NOT disappoint!

So I'm starting to see posts about how canning can help with these rising grocery store prices and my answer is: it depends

It depends on what you use, how you cook, and what equipment you have.

If you're big on tomatoes and berries, I'd suggest investing in a chest freezer, honestly.
