Some friends last weekend kinda landed on a working theory that Important Art Museums are some of the last places random Americans will be exposed to surprise in art that might make them feel something--even if the feeling is distaste--because you go as a Tourist Destination and can't pick the art.
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

I often wonder how many people think of a wildly popular game like "Stray", which is basically structurally identical to a classic point and click adventure game, as something else entirely because it is expensive looking and has direct controls.
With adventure games specifically, the idea that adventure games are a "dead genre" is almost baked into the received narrative about adventure games to the point of distracting people from the fact that more adventure games are coming out now than ever were in the 90s
Been seeing an interesting thing on social media with both fighting games and adventure games, where people who haven’t played them since the 90s will say “I wish they still made X genre” or “there aren’t any indie games in X genre”, when they’re more active than they’ve ever been

imo Shigeru Miyamoto and Masahiro Sakurai both get that Games exist on the same plane connecting Toys and Movies. But Miyamoto only values movies insofar as they can sell the toys, whereas Sakurai understands that a fundamental joy of toys is making up little movies in your head about them.

After re-watching and looking at its production history, realizing how important it was for the historical context of New Line Cinema, Jim Henson, and corporate sponsorship in blockbuster movies, my new hot take is that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) should be in the Criterion Collection.
