I love Starfleet Academys theme of the kids challenging the notion that Starfleet is an inherently good institution by virtue of its liberal progressive legacy alone but instead must change through accountability for its past harm & by refusing to create a homogenized culture that subsumes diversity

You are doing the right thing. It sucks to be under siege but you are under siege. And you won't be free while these law enforcement agencies continue to exist.
I can't describe how bad Minneapolis feels right now. My neighbors are pulling kids out of school. The public schools are offering remote learning until 2/12. We are having conversations in our alleys about how to protect ourselves. It feels like a military occupation with a blockade.
The US Department of Agriculture suspends all federal funding to Minnesota, effective immediately.

what if your⚓officers' uniforms didn't just show rank, but encoded what gods they survived meeting?

wrote about designing naval uniforms as worldbuilding—color as theology, insignia as mythology, and why competence can look like divinity 🔱

How to Make Your Officers Look Like Gods
Naval fiction has given us competence. I want to give you apotheosis. What happens when you bring Gothic symbolic density to naval fiction. A craft guide to designing uniforms, insignia, and material ...

The sheer number of videos of the shooting is horrific, but in the vein of what @prisonculture.bsky.social has been saying, it proves how many people cared enough to show up where ICE was and record them. It wasn't just one or two legal observers, and when Good was shot, they didn't abandon her.

This is especially pertinent given that Greenland is the only polity in the Americas that is majority indigenous.
This idea that either Greenlanders OR Canadians would ever be just given equivalent voting status or citizen status upon annexation is the most amazingly naive assumption, on a long list of amazingly naive assumptions among people talking about this.
You also have libs who support Canada getting annexed because then the Democrats would win every election. As if Canadians would ever forgive those who helped destroy our country

Always a good idea to turn off auto-play videos; choose what you see and what you don't.
if you do not want to watch the video, go to settings > content and media and uncheck the "autoplay videos and gifs" box right now

given that this happened after 1919 too, it makes me wonder if the reason public health didn't take off until the 20th century wasn't just science, but the lack of incentive: if humans dont' reward govts that protect them from disease or punish those that don't, then why try? Easier to blame others.

India lost *millions* of people, there were people out on the streets begging for oxygen canisters and beds, Twitter turned into a bulletin board to find the same because the government abandoned the people, corpses were floating down rivers. & India forgave, forgot, and voted the same gov in.
there’s a thread on reddit right now called “was COVID really that bad?” and it is interesting to read people’s accounts five years out

there seems to be a collective trauma response where people (outside of healthcare workers) don’t remember how many people died

someone called it anticlimactic

Though its related to my interests, I have to be careful about reading into Japan in WW2 and the Cultural Revolution because I start getting nightmares.

I really dislike the internets belief that "to understand a conflict you must watch the atrocities on an endless loop."
literally anybody whose *actual job* involves having to watch atrocity videos will tell you it's hugely psychologically self-destructive and not something you should voluntarily put yourself through on a daily basis.
Nobody is supposed to be able to "handle" witnessing atrocity and those who think they can are lying to themselves! You're fucking yourself up to feel holy! That's a hairshirt!

Illinois State Police have been cooperating & assisting ICE. Ive watched countless videos of our own officers brutally assault peaceful protestors. After the actions in Minnesota today I want to see this cooperation end. I will not support you or any future election bid.

There’s a good bit in Martha Wells’ Fugitive Telemetry abt how annoying Murderbot finds it when (sentient) bots are programmed to mimic human mannerisms that don’t make sense given their actual sensory inputs, which were built BY HUMANS, just to make humans more comfortable (this is also abt autism)

Here’s a fun top five: things that are consensus among historians but are essentially unknown by the public. Richard I, a bad king of England. Roman Empire, fell in 1453. Paul, more important than Jesus. Witch burning, a modern phenomenon not a medieval one. Britain last invaded in 1688. Yours?
As someone who wrote a dissertation on that damnable Frenchman; one can only hope.
