Anyway... You're looking at all-timers in like...seven genres or subgenres. He didn't get credit as a great director — zero Oscar nods for directing — because he lacked a "style," but... Man.

Yes, if you're always hysterical, if you have one glib answer for everything ("He has dementia," "He's a Russian asset," etc), you'll sound silly and people will stop listening. But looking at 2015-25, the "This is REALLY BAD" journos were right 90% of the time. The "calm down" crew? Mostly wrong.

Stoppard also had a huge (and largely unchronicled) film legacy. Obviously, just the work for which he was credited--Shakespeare in Love, Empire of the Sun, Brazil--is major, but he was also one of the most in-demand rewriters, fixers, and polishers in movies. We still don't know everything he did.

I’m dumbstruck by news of the death of Tom Stoppard—maybe because he hoarded all the words and knew how to use them better than just about anyone. I hope we savor his spectacular wit and erudition and argue about the politics of his plays forever. He was monumental, and also a kind and curious man.

People will die, and are currently dying, because RFK was granted one of the most powerful megaphones in the country. Two people who could have thrown barriers in front of his climb decided not to; there's a sex scandal here but it is not the biggest scandal.
