Best big-picture fisking of the perversions of modern American capitalism that I've ever read.

Our founders, though deeply flawed, understood that democracy requires an informed citizenry and a government accountable to it people. That’s why the press is the only profession protected by the Constitution. It’s also why autocrats and oligarchs seek to control and destroy it.

Hey, so, I don’t do civil litigation, is it generally considered good when the judge does this?

Context: this speech is from SIR THOMAS MORE, a history written, as near as scholars can tell, in the early 1600s by 6 or 7 people including Dekker, Heywood, Chettle, Shakespeare, and Munday.

It was never performed, because Jacobean England was a police state and it was banned by the censor.
Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

I'll bet 10:1 that this is CIA programs being used for domestic ops.

Being more specific, it's likely CIA data/programs used for one of:
1. Some Trumpian revenge scheme targeting opponents
2. Support to ICE
3. Repurposing the counter-terror apparatus to target antifa (most concerning by FAR)

media ownership is stocked with foundationally terrible and unqualified fail-upward trust fund brunchlords who don't even want to pay for health insurance or a living wage for journalists, much less spend the time necessary to flesh out content moderation or protect their employees from harassment
It *is* really important to note that a lot of marginalized reporters wanted the comment section removed because it became a vehicle for harassment over time, particularly during the Gamergate era. Though a lack of resources poured into community management played a role in that problem
news websites made a mistake when they killed on-site comment sections and outsourced all audience interaction to hyper-scaled, badly-run trash fires like Facebook

Musk is certainly committed to immanentizing the TESCREAL Eschaton.

(He's referencing a matrioshka brain. Originally from a Bradbury story, they're show up a lot in singularity-themed science fiction. Essentially megastructures surrounding a star that use all its energy output for computation.)
Oh my gd.

Musk is fucking insane with this quoted sentence from the press release on SpaceX acquiring xAI.

"This marks not just the next chapter, but the next book in SpaceX and xAI's mission: scaling to make a sentient sun to understand the Universe."

When I use the word, I intend the Wilhoit meaning. I think that gets at the core the best. Whether you're athwart history shouting "stop" depends on your in-group's relation to power. If you are on top, in control, then yes, "stop!" If you aren't, you want radical change! Core is the same.

This is an INCREDIBLY important podcast ep. It's long and inside basebally, but this is a hugely important force shaping our media and political reality right now. I really hope people will give it a serious listen, and if it's confusing or there are parts you disagree with, please ask questions.
Today on Volts: I'm joined by the great @michaelhobbes.bsky.social to discuss "reactionary centrism," an intellectual tendency that's come to dominate US public life. You know the type: would never view themselves as conservative, yet finds voluntary pronoun use vastly more aggravating than fascism.

You can test new tech ideas using the Seinfeld Test

Would the product eliminate the plot of an episode? (Google maps, cell phones, paypal, battery packs)

Good tech.

Would the product inspire new Seinfeld plots? (NFTs, AI chatbots, crypto currency, blindboxes, metaverse land sales)

Bad tech.

It makes sense that the actually-real global cabal of powerful pedophiles made destroying USAID one of their first priorities.

They have to protect the global supply of profoundly desperate poor kids - that’s exactly who they target for trafficking and rape.

The Pew poll, conducted Jan. 20-26, found majorities of all religious groups except white evangelicals disapprove of Trump. White evangelicals give him a net 69% approval, which is about the same as in 2019.

i can confirm the chats I’m in which include renowned security specialists - people who actually advise on how to protect your comms from authoritarian dictators for a living - also think this outburst of paranoia about Signal is really weird and unwarranted
every Signal chat of laypeople is losing their minds over the wildest opsec advice imaginable and every Signal chat of security professionals is like “dude wtf”

The vast majority of problems can be avoided by not being foolish, being aware of your surroundings, and using common sense

Ian is correct, as per usual.

The only real exception that comes to mind is the 2016 Samsung Galaxy Note 7, which was a burner phone in a different sense of the word and worked exactly like you'd expect.
Burner phones basically never work the way people think they do, which is why I’m explicitly not recommending them here. I don’t want to give people a false sense of security. Having a phone that doesn’t really have anything on it is going to be more practically effective if your phone gets taken
