I, a 15-year career federal employee, am responsible for ACA subsidies being taken away.

Not the tens of millions of people who voted to give Donald Trump's Republican Party control of the American government, no, they're blameless victims. It's my fault and I should suffer for it.

fuck this shit.

And it's not people like me - a GS-12 SINK with a five-figure savings account - I'm worried about. Think of families raising kids on a GS-9. Those are the people you're asking to sacrifice their financial security and sanity.

At the end of the day, how much pain are you willing to inflict on them?

anyway I encourage any bsky poaster expressing this sentiment to donate 100% of your income to charity for the next 13 months in solidarity

Maybe mutual aid can help your sorry ass out, because it sure as fuck isn't gonna do jack for me in Mike Johnson's district

Anyway air traffic being snarled is a pain and SNAP is a travesty, but also not getting a paycheck for going on 6 weeks kinda sucks too, esp working for 4 of them

Mamdani got a humanities degree.

His win helps to illustrate that one of the central forces driving higher ed’s dissolution of the humanities is the fear that teaching people how power works can also lead to their interest in seizing it on behalf of the less powerful.

not sure if it’s obvious by now but i’ve got orders to monitor ICE activity and, as usual, i’d appreciate any help bsky has to offer. if you gotta tip, my signal account is in my bio.

i’m very mechanical. i can track things. data. paperwork. but i could always use help w/ people.
NEW: ICE is planning to build a shadow deportation network in Texas. A proposal outlines a 24/7 transport operation run by armed contractors—turning Texas into the logistical backbone of an industrialized deportation machine.

A very normal, lib neighbor of mine (albeit a philosophy professor) was invoking Locke the other day and arguing the social contract was being broken here in Chicago and that in her view violence was becoming justifiable which was kind of a trippy conversation to have in the laundry room

It's been a decade since I worked in offices serving SNAP applicants, and I vividly recall a similar range; some were in the process of escaping abusers, others recovering from injury/illness that kept them from working the hours they needed to get by, all circumstances they never wanted or imagined
when I worked in community services in the US, I helped fill out SNAP applications for people who'd once had successful careers as lawyers, healthcare professionals, bankers. The jaws of poverty can snap shut on anyone.

In my professional role, I've interviewed SNAP recipients with advanced degrees and professional licenses. Often an illness or injury, or the need to step away from work to care for an ill or elderly family member, is the catalyst to falling into poverty.

Amazon is helping fund a $300 million build of a ballroom for the White House.

Independent bookstores are donating to food banks and organizations that help with food insecurity.

They are not the same.

The many monarchs of Europe, the slaver's Confederacy, the Kaiser, the Nazis, the Italian fascists, Imperial Japan and many more all assumed that because liberals value peace and human life, that they were weak and feckless and easily beaten.

Go look for them now.
I think fundamentally the problem with post liberal thinkers is that they seem to assume that vanquishing liberalism results in their enemies being converted or defeated and not becoming radicalized into enemies who no longer extend the mercies they once did.

Illegal as shit, ADA violations must be prosecuted at al levels, bunch of GS-14s need to be out of a job, etc etc

But using what sounds like MILCON to pay BAH is a level of insanity even by this thing's standard that might actually wake up the appropriators, it's a whole different subcommittee!!

Hunger isn't just empty bellies, it's foreclosures & repossessions & evictions & theft & domestic violence & fraud. You cannot calculate how bad things will be down the line when you take away critical services.
"things get bad when people are hungry" has been the #1 rule of societies since the literal beginning of civilization as a concept to the point saying hunger causes unrest isn't a prediction so much as it is an observation

When the Great Depression hit it briefly created a massive change in how people perceived "handouts" and "government aid" because suddenly "Frank down the street lost his job and needed a handout."
And people KNEW "Frank" and knew he wasn't lazy or a grifter. For a very brief moment people GOT IT.
I suspect the next few weeks of living in a Dorothea Lange photo are going to shatter a lot of Americans' preconceptions about who's using SNAP and WIC.
