Years ago (maybe ten?) I was at a reading/Q and A with Jhumpa Lahiri and the interviewer asked her something — I forget what — and she replied, “I don’t accept the premise of your question,” & then clammed up, and they just moved on. I respected it so much and never forgot it.
Why decline all these chances to defend feminism? Because to participate would be accepting the premise that our rights and humanity are up for debate in the first place.
