If the UK had surrendered halfway through the Blitz, many lives would have indeed been saved. But many more would have been lost under Nazi occupation AND THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T SURRENDER TO FASCISTS!

Nothing about this deal tonight seems like a negotiated peace of any sort. Just a capitulation.

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

From the sound of it, this is still going on
Anti-fois-gras protesters outside of Pammy's, near Central Square in Cambridge. Police were rolling up as I was walking by.

ADMIN: We’d love to keep feeding folks if only it were legal.

JUDGES 1 & 2: It’s legal!

ADMIN: Sorry, not sure I believe you.

JUDGE: NOT feeding them is illegal! Feed them now!!

ADMIN: Let me talk to your supervisor.

APPEALS: Feed them.

ADMIN: I only really listen to one court. SCOTUS?

I had a nightmare where I got FOMO from a fake Instagram channel that posted AI-generated "events" to advertise their scam event planning service

"Fake parties you weren't invited to" isn't the main reason genAI content is bad for society, but it would kinda suck to feel left out because of them

I'm happy that Mamdani crushed it in NYC. Really good vibes with that guy.

For my fellow Cantabrigians, here's a live tally of our city council and school committee votes.

Fingers crossed, but it's looking like our bike lanes are going to be built :)
This is my thread of #cambma Election Night live tracking results.
Google Sheet: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

So far no results, but the polls only just closed (8pm, or later if people are still in line), & mail-in ballots haven't all have been yet run through the machines at polling places.

IRS Direct File dies a sad, quick death after only a brief time among the living.

Why? It's not because it's a bad idea or that it didn't work.

It's because TurboTax's parent company spent decades trying to make sure they controlled the e-filing market:

Check out this office building that my friend saw in Waltham.

It has not yet been leased to any businesses afaik. Probably because the sort of business with a strategy evil enough to match this lighting isn't going to want to be this obvious

We strongly condemn @CondéNast’s consolidation plans for Teen Vogue, a move that is clearly designed to blunt the award-winning magazine’s insightful journalism at a time when it is needed the most. More from our statement:

This sucks! Teen Vogue was actually really good for articles on political topics :( I'm sad to hear that they seem to be changing course
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

Seth Meyers >>> Jimmy Kimmel

I hope NBC is willing to stand up to Trump like Disney/ABC/whoever did for Kimmel if it comes to that
Trump says it’s “probably illegal” for seth meyers to be anti-Trump

(Hard to imagine a better endorsement of Seth’s show)

Look folks gen AI videos are out in the wild so if you weren't already being careful about sharing rage bait videos then now is a great time to start

If you can't trace a video back to a trusted source then I recommend leaving it where it is, like a slice of bologna you found on the street

I have a few friends on here who have had social media meltdowns, and the trick to bouncing back is being kind. Kind people are given slack. So, if nothing else moves you to be kind, consider it social media insurance. Because we all have those days where we will fuck up and hope to be forgiven.
