I don’t mean to sound extreme, but I don’t think we should have torture camps for people with criminal records either.

One of the more important stock-taking moments to watch a bootlegged news program censored in your country.

Finally got my shit together to make another warranty hit on weird-gurgling-noise aircon. Servicing ppl came today, warned me it could be 1 of 4 culprits, attended to two of those culprits. Aircon no longer gurgles, now sounds like distant taxiing plane. Might be an improvement? :/

It looks like it's been scrubbed from every official 60 Minutes page now.

It's only a 30-second promo but here it is if you didn't get a chance to see it.

I'm a trans woman who, if anyone ever asks, will give my deadname as a different male name each time. It's been the single fastest way to find people who talk behind my back. If that name leaks I know just who leaked it and just who to instant block forever.

One of the reasons why I go so hard on science misinformation/disinformation, is that as a working scientist it is frustrating to see your research misreported to push an agenda.

For example, consider this piece of right-wing propaganda from The Telegraph that was just published

Truth
You may think public libraries have some calculated, objective system for what they acquire...

No.

If your library has a decent manga section, it's only because of 1 to 2 people who 'know' manga, and their boss asks them what to get. Some rando can radically change the vibe of a library collection

Did you know we’re shipping whistles anywhere in the US? Email whistlerequests [at] proton [dot] me for your free 3D printed whistles. We’ve sent over 30,000 so far in December!

Now would be a great time for a 10 episode, 20 hour prestige series about the ten years between 1916 and 1926, covering the establishment of the 8-hr work day & 5-day work week, in the US. Each episode would be one year & the middle episode should be entirely devoted to the Battle of Blair Mountain.

I love all of this, including the back-thread(? Quote replies? Thingies) So Much. People and reference queries and 🥰
In the pre-internet era, I had the last line of a poem stuck in my head for weeks. I took advantage of a trip to the university with my mother to visit the library. After a lot of searching by myself, I approached the reference librarian with my one remembered line, expecting her to laugh at me.
When I worked in an art library I had a patron arrange themselves in the shape of the sculpture they were looking for but could not name. Iirc we eventually found it. This was before Google image search so we had to use the Met catalog raisonne.

If you're not trans, I don't think I can fully explain how important this is.

It's so powerful that one of the most circulated science media publications in the world has come out and said "trans children are real and providing transition care improves their lives." That's groundbreaking.
The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition
Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

this is a good reminder of how things that are shitty but have been accepted as normal and inevitable can actually turn out to be abnormal and evitable with some science, time, education and political will

Not a fan of modern sanitised motorway services. A service station should feel like the last port on the edge of civilisation. You should only be able to buy skewered meats and spare parts for your hyperdrive. There should be arm wrestling. You should have to watch out for bounty hunters.

I have a scooter. I can walk. I can't, however, walk through 80 miles of airport. I can walk onto an airplane or through hallways. I can't walk the .5 mile to the convention center.

People, get smarter, it's embarrassing at this point.

I have long thought that if John Howard had been the opposition leader after the Port Arthur massacre, he would have fought tooth and nail against any changes to gun laws, and used the event & proposed law changes to attack the govt & cause division.

This week shows that to be true.
