There is a crazy passivity to the common conception of the dream of “becoming a writer”, where you find the right entry point and you are accelerated, bobsled run-like, to fame and fortune.

No one wants to hear it’s just writing all the time and not taking a lot of negative things to heart.
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +

On #Nigeria:

You never want to play host to other people’s wars. And you never want to internationalize your domestic security problems.

Getting foreign assistance is fine. But you must always launder and domesticate it. You must always retain the initiative.

Contrary to popular belief on this 59th anniversary of Kwanzaa, is that it is a distinctly Black American holiday, and it is not an "alternative" to Xmas.

Its goal is to spend the last 7 days of the year incorporating the 7 principles of Kwanzaa in preparation of the New Year coming up

This is the same dynamic which happened to me, a year ago to the day: a faculty appeals panel cleared
me entirely, after a six month investigation. NU effectively ignored it.

This is why adhering to rules (in Congress, the UN, unis) rarely works: the rules benefit the rulers, who can ignore them.
Texas A&M University will not reinstate a lecturer who was fired after a video of her teaching about gender identity in a children’s literature class went viral, despite a faculty appeals panel unanimously concluding that her dismissal was not justified.

A vice chancellor upheld the firing of Melissa McCoul, seen in a viral video being confronted by a student on her gender identity teachings, saying the termination was done with “good cause.”

true. that's bc you've allowed your sense of style to be narrowly defined by fashion brands, instead of thinking about it in terms of cultural history. over the course of the 20th century, many groups have dressed well, even if they didn't conform to fashion trends or bourgeois respectability

Terrific story about Rob Reiner being as much of a mensch in real life as he seemed.
I’m just going to tell the story. Back in 2000 I was volunteering for the Gore campaign when he came along with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Alfre Woodard and Dule Hill to a GOTV event here in MN. He ended up sitting down across from me stuffing his envelopes.

As we mourn Rob Reiner, don’t skip this: he was, pretty much, personally responsible for overturning California’s Prop 8 banning same sex marriage.
