He said this deliberately because he is a Nazi and he wants you to know he's a Nazi who you can't touch. He also wants other Nazis to know they can be open about the fact they are Nazis too.

This isn't an oversight, a fumble or an opportunity for a "heh, well actually, dummy" zinger.

For the uninitiated: The pope being this direct and explicit to U.S. bishops about how to respond to a domestic policy happening in real time is…unusual.

Pope Leo told U.S. bishops visiting him at the Vatican on Wednesday that they should firmly address how immigrants are being treated by President Donald Trump's hardline policies, attendees said, in the latest push by the pontiff on the issue. For @reuters.com:

The government having the power to sack judges whose decisions government against them would be an autocracy, pure and simple. There could be no legal constraints on a government's actions if judges knew they would be sacked for going against them.

I don't think we'll ever get another sentence which sums up everything the New York Times embodies quite like "Some legal experts have called it a crime to summarily kill civilians".
mattcameron.bsky.social
hey @nytimes.com: there is no counterpoint here. There are no credible legal experts who would EVER say that the US military has any right or authority to blow civilian craft out of the Caribbean and kill their crews from afar without any provocation. There is no other side to this question.
"Some legal experts have called it a crime to summarily kill civilians not directly taking part in hostilities, even if they are believed to be smuggling drugs."

I will not back down.

Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power.

What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?

I know the audience would be me and six other people, but I'd love a casual Trek game where you fly through a sector in a Miranada class and just do boring science scans and help your command crew with personal issues. "Sir! We found a new class of arthropod! And Lt. Dawes likes Vulcan food now!"

You could just talk about Jim Crow. I promise you, there's no need to leave America's shores to talk about life in a fascist state
motherjones.com
Under the Third Reich, most Germans generally lived in the law-bound normative state, while Jews and other disfavored people were victims of the arbitrary and violent prerogative state.

The dual state is characterized by the facade of normalcy obscuring the fact of an authoritarian state.
The “dual state” theory was invented to describe Nazis. The Supreme Court could take us there.
Authoritarianism—but make it look like the rule of law.

Good that renewables are rising - but if you've ever asked yourself "are renewables replacing fossil fuel or just meeting added demand so far?" this chart provides the clearest answer I've ever seen. Everything except renewables is basically constant. Hopefully we'll see fossil decline soon.

Right. I was only a witness, but it would have been very distressing if I were the victim, and potentially devastating to the case if I were the suspect.

In the UK we don't have shutdowns because if the legislators can't pass a budget, the government falls and the civil service keeps working, instead of the other way round.
chrismurphyct.bsky.social
When Democrats controlled the White House, Senate and House there were no shutdowns because we acted like adults and negotiated with Republicans.

Now Republicans control everything and they're refusing to even show up for work. Because they think the chaos of a shutdown is fun.

The last time I gave a statement to police, the version they presented back to me did not reflect either what I had said or how I had said it. If asked to acknowledge it in court, I would have refused.
galvinalmanza.bsky.social
To put it another way, I have represented thousands of people. I cannot think of a single instance in which the initial police report was entirely correct. Not one.

Journalists, please stop copying them down as if they were. Or at least give context re credibility!

Whether you're a casual news reader or a breaking news reporter at the NYTimes, I implore you--please, please, please--do not believe or report DHS/ICE/CBP's side of events uncritically. End the state's monopoly on legitimate storytelling. They are not the objective arbiter of what really happened.

It's so incredible how low homicide rates are in Europe. The UK, with a population of 70 million people, had fewer than 600 murders in 2023.

I remember finding it refreshing when politicians stood for things I *agreed* with, but nobody would deny that Margaret Thatcher stood for *something*.

Even Neil Kinnock and John Major stood for some things, however wishy-washy they were about them.

What does Keir Starmer stand for? Suit fittings?

How did we get to a point where politicians standing for things is refreshing?

I feel like until at least the nineties, everyone agreed that was the *point* of politicians.

I like Zack Polanski for the same reason I like Zohran Mamdani.

He’s happy to stand for something.

And in a world of pandering focus grouped bullshit politics, it’s really kind of refreshing.

Flailing Tory leader Kemi Badenoch’s latest “idea” is a Trumpian immigration hit squad, vowing to deport 150,000 a year. There’s no credible plan for where the deported people would go, how treaties would be upheld, or how overstretched institutions would cope.
