The government having the power to sack judges whose decisions government against them would be an autocracy, pure and simple. There could be no legal constraints on a government's actions if judges knew they would be sacked for going against them.

hey @nytimes.com: there is no counterpoint here. There are no credible legal experts who would EVER say that the US military has any right or authority to blow civilian craft out of the Caribbean and kill their crews from afar without any provocation. There is no other side to this question.

In the UK we don't have shutdowns because if the legislators can't pass a budget, the government falls and the civil service keeps working, instead of the other way round.

The last time I gave a statement to police, the version they presented back to me did not reflect either what I had said or how I had said it. If asked to acknowledge it in court, I would have refused.

End the state's monopoly on legitimate storytelling. They are not the objective arbiter of what really happened.

I remember finding it refreshing when politicians stood for things I *agreed* with, but nobody would deny that Margaret Thatcher stood for *something*.

Even Neil Kinnock and John Major stood for some things, however wishy-washy they were about them.
