If you want AI, first you have to take care of your people. You have to have REPLICATORS before you get HOLODECKS, you fucking assholes.

If EVERY human is taken care of, you can pretend to make art. Your $25 entropy credits can buy 0.0003% of an AI CEO's yacht or support a real human. Easy choice.

If you want to see how quickly everyone goes into manufacturing consent mode, compare the full-court press tonight to the response to any of the people ICE has shot in the last few months, some of whom died.

It tells you a lot about this fucking country that the headline includes the record of a high school football team, and not the reason for the warrants.
Coach Turner is now wanted on ten warrants, including five counts of possession of child pornography and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor, according to Va. State Police. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

A Gen Z-led advocacy group announced a boycott campaign targeting major corporations “that enable, profit from, or directly collaborate with ICE.” Beyond the Ballot launched “Not With My Dollars: ICE Out of My Wallet” just days before Black Friday kicks off.

"Assume everyone I interact with online is struggling with their mental health" has only become a more important guiding principle in the past couple years
My personal guidelines for dealing with people on social media:

Assume everyone is a friend you haven't yet gotten to know.
Assume everyone is struggling with their mental health
Don't promise any emotional labor you might not be able to provide
If someone seems like a hater, disengage right away

There's a reason one of my mentor's regular reminders was "if they don't curse when you walk in the room you're not doing your job right."
I think it’s such a perfect case study for why “access journalism” to political figures is such a crock of shit. Most people can’t spend a ton of time with people without getting to like them, or at least sympathize with them. This is obviously an extreme case, but I think it’s always dangerous
One thing about RFKuzzi is that I feel like we all need to recognize these cloying “personal” details as signs of simpering sycophancy.

When a reporter breathlessly says he was at RFK Jr’s side when he heard the Kirk news, we should think: “Oh, I get it. This reporter is a huge piece of shit.”

The Nuzzi thing is a good reminder that outside the deep structural issues of energy/subsistence, most of what's happening right now is an old-fashioned crisis of elite legitimacy, which sounds comforting until you realize how some of those have turned out in the past

Lots of people sharing this clip because it's funny and cathartic but I also genuinely believe it's important.

We have to win the narrative battle between "I live in a corrupt society and that's just how it is" and "I live in a corrupt society and we are going to defeat and humiliate these ghouls."
Good morning to Brazilian reporter Manuela Borges, who’s been waiting eleven years for this petty moment. ❤️ 🇧🇷

Even if this statement was true (plenty of replies disagree), do they think about *why* this is? An LLM tends to find the average output, and that works for code in a way that it absolutely *doesn't* work for, say, creative writing. Average code functions. Average writing is bland and boring.
I think that may be the core division here: if you are an author or an artist the cons of generative AI very likely outweigh the pros for you

If you are a software developer the opposite is true

I sometimes wonder how much of these guys' surprise at real people's hostile reactions to AI is driven by them being high on their own supply (of uncritical affirmation and constant subservient praise)
Is this platform still massively against AI or has it moved more towards acceptance?

Even more unpopular opinion: Star Wars is mid. It has always been mid. The original trilogy was a fairy tale dressed up with space ships and lasers so boys could like it. I have been sick of hearing about Star Wars since before the prequels came out.

as a society we're dealing with an AGI fraud being foisted upon us. ML and LLMs are tools that will have ideal use cases, but what's being sold is a wholesale reshaping of society, the economy, and the environment in the service of a small cadre of billionaires. that's what people are reacting to

Saw an interesting piece of advice recently: ask the AI search engines for an answer in a field in which you are very knowledgeable.

The results will make it clear just how much they get wrong, and how brazen they are about it.

Now, apply that to every subject in which you are NOT an expert.
Looked up “what mobile parking app do I need for <this town>” - AI summary on Google confidently gave me the wrong answer, which I ignored because **it is wrong a third of the time, about ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING** (according to the last study I read.)

The shit just doesn’t work.

I keep saying, Google intentionally making its search worse is a world-historical fumble, and it's a huge opportunity for so many others across the internet, if they'll just seize it..
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

Quoted is a good thread about the article and issues with AI reporting in general. I want to write a thread about how I knew the answer to the question in the headline was "no" before I read it (and it's not even Betteridge's law). LLMs are not conscious. How could they be?
Okay, I hestitate to even share this link, because while I like NYMag I do not want to send this journalist in particular clicks, b ut:

If your framing is that an academic is the "dominant voice" and the underdogs are OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, maybe a fact check in is order??
