Now that Kirk's killer seems to be caught, maybe the news could spare a moment's attention for the right wing, from the commentariat up to the GOP and president, whose immediate reaction was not mourning, but to seize the opportunity to try to incite violence against groups they hate

Institutional statements like this serve the same function as decrying “polarization.” They purport to diagnose the problem while studiously avoiding pointing out that the right bears much more blame for destroying norms and undermining any sense of mutual respect.
It's worth asking why every elite institution is issuing statements like this rather than pointing out the obvious fact that the institutional right commits and glorifies violence far more than the left. Is there a reason you feel you can't say that out loud?

Too bad the GOP effectively criminalized studying how information moves online and news orgs laid off and demonized all the reporters who covered the burgeoning online accelerationist performative death cults. All of that work was somehow "censorship" that needed to be stopped. Now we're here.

This is the line that Dems need to push. It can't be simply. "Political violence is bad" it MUST be "Political violence is bad and Trump and his ilk are responsible for creating conditions ripe for political violence"
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) on the shooting of Charlie Kirk:

"Political violence, unfortunately, has ramped up in this country ... I think there are people who are fomenting it in this country. I think the president's rhetoric often foments it."

How much did he make to help implement American fascism? Which is kidnapping and killing people at hyperspeed? People talk about him like they merely disagreed with his style, or like difference of opinion are strictly aesthetic. He profited off making the hate machine more deadly.

When Minnesota Democratic State Representative Melissa Hortman was murdered in her home by a gun toting MAGA maniac less than 90 days ago they said nothing. Trump even skipped her funeral and chose to play golf instead. He had the chance to condemn political violent and did not.

For everyone saying political violence has no place in this country…

Remember two Democratic legislators were shot in Minnesota just this year.

And America shrugged and moved on.

I need you guys to think long and hard what it would mean if porn gets banned.

But banning porn would remove the protections that came along with it, allowing for more abuse material and child porn with no recourse

All of that shit would be pushed underground

Trump needs the lab leak bc it distracts from his abysmal COVID response/makes him a victim.

Bhattacharya needs the lab leak to own the scientists who rejected his inhumane mass infection advocacy.

The political right needs the lab leak to distract from the consequences of their COVID minimizing.

When my parents got married, their marriage was illegal in seven states. That’s how recent this shift is: my (still living) parents could not visit some states for the first four years of their marriage.
In the 1950s, polling on interracial marriage was at 4% approval in the United States. Loving v. Virginia is 1967. We hit an above 50% approval rating for the first time in the 1990s. In 2021, 94% of Americans approved of interracial marriage.
I say this for everyone who thinks that we just have to go along with what the public things: we don’t. The public can change their minds. They have in the past.

We can just do the right thing and then not end up looking like a horrific bigot in a handful of years.

This is really important. Do NOT use the AI summaries at the top of google searches. Ignore them. This is especially important if you don't have any prior knowledge about the topic, but also a good general rule.

Search sources, scrutinize them carefully and double-check with other sources.
