I’ve been switching off Radio 3 when the news comes on directly
because of the blatantly racist headlines. There is a deep sickness at the heart of British society.
It really is, it's creeping into Radio 3 too.

I'm convinced it's a deliberate strategy to create a background narrative to casual listeners that immigration is a "crisis issue".

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

At music college, I would take these to acting class every week and see if I could recruit a Rosencrantz. (Or a Guildenstern. I didn’t discriminate at all.) In the end I had to be banned from bringing them to let us do some opera.
Either Stoppard was a genius or there’s no such thing. RIP 💔

RIP. "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" is brilliant. This passage delivered by Gary Oldman in the film hits me hard every time.

His CV as a script doctor was very impressive just on its own!

His IMDB profile would be incredibly impressive on its own. I had no idea until now that he was a script doctor on so many major movies!

GUILDENSTERN: There must have been a moment, at the beginning, where we could have said-no. But somehow we missed it.
(He looks round and sees he is alone.)
Rosen--?
Guil--?
(He gathers himself.)
Well, we'll know better next time. Now you see me, now you-
(And disappears.)

Thank you, #TomStoppard 😢

51 years old. Walking around shops on the last Saturday in November arguing with the Christmas songs playing over the tannoy. I suppose we all know that day will come at some point. Even so.

Honestly "Don't Engage, Just Block" has transformed my social media experience so profoundly that it's hard for me to describe. It's just so much better to be online now.
i also liked the fact that most of us who had come from the other site had the mentality of not giving "bad actors" the benefit of the doubt on here , and told all to block, not mute, an move on

A not well enough known fact is the extent to which Selina Cadell,
aside from her many other achievements, is responsible for teaching so many of my generation of British opera singers to act. #ExhibitA
You can keep your Poirots and your Marples, the greatest murder mystery moment on tv is when John Nettles discovers Selina Cadell has been popped into a tumble drier

This is brutal and just shoves vulnerable broke people into homelessness.
The government’s decision to halve the time limit for refugees to leave Home Office accommodation is driving people into homelessness and exploitation, according to migrant rights campaigners and homelessness charities

By me, for @theleaduk.bsky.social national.thelead.uk/p/new-asylum...
New asylum policies making homeless refugees “targets for the far right”
Labour’s abrupt return to the 28-day move-on period is pushing vulnerable people into rough sleeping and exposing them to fraud and abuse.

This trend in cinema also seems to have bled in to theatre lighting too - I’ve lost count of the number of operas where I’ve wished I could see the singers’ faces.

Many of them universities that are among the biggest employers in the very ‘left behind’ towns and cities that Labour talks so much about…

If the government can retrospectively apply immigration laws to refugees, it can also make things you did in the past that were legal at the time illegal and throw you in prison for them. I could make retrospective taxes and bill you for what you made ten years ago, for example.

Making these changes retroactively is a fundamentally unethical thing. Moving the goalposts. It’s cheating
At least 160,000 people have been granted refugee status over the past five years. It now seems they are intended to be caught by the Government’s plans to make refugees wait up to 20 years for settlement - even for those just months away from ILR

This will reduce the numbers of foreign students coming to the UK and simply leave a bigger hole in the higher education budget which the government will probably fix with higher student fees for the rest of us.
