Once again thinking about every actor trying to justify taking the money for the new HP series.

this feels like another iteration of the "what if I give a homeless man money and he buys booze" thing. So then he bought booze, so what, you are not his personal life coach. You did your bit now go live your life.
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

I keep coming back to this, because it is important to keep in mind, I think, given recent goings-on re: trans exclusion. The culture has changed *a lot* over the past 20 years and transphobes won't be able to undo that with politics, billionaire lawfare, transphobic EHRC guidance, or whatever.
I think this prediction is holding up pretty well, and maybe I should have noted the failure of the Turn Charlie Kirk Into A Martyr moment might have been the pinnacle of the phenomenon. In some deep way I think the New Right Loser Men fail to understand what state power can and can't do for them.

Pure evil.

Making the lives of disabled people harder by making them jump through hoops to prove they are the deserving poor, benefits nobody in any way. Yet these ideas get pushed because it appeals to the meanest nastiest pettiest little fuckers around... 1/
One of the biggest impacts I’ve seen from the unproven idea that people are wrongfully using disability accommodations is that people stop trusting people with disabilities and in fact further restrict, remove, and demonize accommodations for people with disabilities in general

Absolutely agree! 🌍✨ Diverse voices in SFF enrich our imaginations and connect us all. Let's champion translated works and explore new worlds together! #SFF #TranslationMatters 💖
We need more SFF in translation, these are magnificent works and help make the SFF conversation global! Please pitch in to get it over the top!
Embroidered Worlds cost $30K and we raised it all, in a combination of a grant and the Kickstarter. For one book. For white writers.

Here, we're trying to get to $10K. After nine months. For two books.

We (yes, wp we) have to see the world differently.

This is beautiful. I hope you see it:

There's a special place in hell for the ghouls and jackals who are using the Supreme Court ruling as a stick with which to threaten women's organisations, many of which have welcomed trans women for years or decades. It doesn't achieve anything or make anyone safer, it's just performative cruelty.

Every trans person who is on a knife edge. On one side is employment for another day. On the other is whether a random transphobe posts "Ick, gross, trans person" with your picture and employer name, and it goes viral. You will get fired, from pretty much any company, if that happens to you.
When writing this piece, I kept thinking back to this Instagram post I saw from a trans woman the other day. This is what I'm talking about. Watch this:

One of the most common replies in any discussion of universal basic income is "but how do we pay for it?" and not once do those same people ever question the costs incurred by not doing UBI. We spend $1.5 trillion every year on the costs of child poverty alone. Poverty ain't free, folks. WE ALL PAY.

"Respectful and understanding" - perhaps they were. I'm not. I don't think any of us should be. I think orgs that do this need to pay a heavy price for doing it. They're afraid of the power transphobes have: and so we must endeavour to build power of our own and to wield it uncompromisingly.
This part is *infuriating*. This cis woman heard an 80 year old trans woman say, 'This is the only place I've been respected as a woman IN MY LIFE.'

And did not immediately think, 'I will fight every inch like a dying badger to keep her in my organization.'

Absolutely pathetic.

Everyone involved in these organisations who isn't a TER needs to stop participating in them immediately. The WI and Girl Guides are done now. They are hate groups. That's it. Set up an alternative one. Leave the transphobes to hang out with each other.

All these statements being made with "utmost regret and sadness" fundamentally don't change the fact that these organisations are all folding to appease one vexatious bigot because she has infinite money, instead of doing the right thing and sticking by their guns and ignoring the Supreme Court.

one of the reasons I stopped engaging in these discussions is our opponents are incapable of addressing criticism. but the point for them is not to hash out these issues, it's to repeat the same thing over and over again until it starts to look like the "truth" for people with institutional power.
Utterly baffling to insist any description of sex as a phenomenon in humans must be applicable to every species with a sex, not least when the more universal a definition of sex becomes the less utility it has.

(And has the state of the argument really progressed so little in six years!?)

It directed ‘concentrated and intensive activity’ on social media.

"parents' rights" are as made up as "sex based rights" and for the same reasons
That MSPs are now openly saying stuff like this is chilling. "Controversial groups like LGBT Youth Scotland"? LGBTYS didn't need to be in my schools for me to be gay, but they sure as hell would have helped me avoid 9 years of fear and self-loathing if they had been. Despicable stuff.

This is a Bill Simmons game, but you’re stranded on a desert island. You can only have one actor’s filmography. You get it all, including cameos. But just the one performer.

I’m taking Cate Blanchett: Talented Mr. Ripley, LOTR, Life Aquatic, Black Bag, Tár, Ponyo, Hot Fuzz, Eyes Wide Shut, Thor
