Generative "AI" is Evil. Not in a metaphysical "imitation of mankind's sacred gifts" way.
In the way it causes very real harm in environmental damage and steals people's work to make them compete with a poor facsimile of it,
and then makes you complicit in this harm.
You don't have to, you can stop.

been kind of a funny thing seeing some reaction to this being "what's he talking about, republicans don't know how to speak with civility and decorum"

just - zoop - right over the head
Mamdani: For too long, those fluent in the good grammar of civility have deployed decorum to mask agendas of cruelty

learning last year that almost all of Xbox's developers were contractors that had 18-month contracts that just barely missed the threshold of paying anybody benefits threw me for a fucking loop and soured me on the company way more than the already-bad mass layoffs
Weird all big budget games take forever to make, it surely can't have anything to do with horrible project managers, or the fact most AAA studios ping pong contractors they fire on yearly cycles to avoid having to provide benefits of any kind causing them to waste a ton of time retraining workers.

I hate these charts so much because they imply chatgpt is comparable to the internet or phones

You could create the same graphic for full screen pop-up advertising on websites and make them look like ultra-rapid technology adoption when really they were just baked unavoidably into the internet
In 2025, AI became pervasive in American life and the economy, with ChatGPT surging in adoption much faster than any other major technology in memory. @nytopinion.nytimes.com

i think what gets overlooked is that part of the humor and charm of edits like these is that you're perfectly aware that someone sat down and spent their own time making it. they chose to do something cool or silly or stupid or genius, regardless of the results

that human element elevates the work
Who needs AI when we had stuff like this? I’ll take photoshop edits over the slop any day

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Tbf if the BBC refused to show the new David Walliams panel show appearance just because they were aware of his behaviour, they would have to cancel an awful lot of the Christmas lineup.

It is 100% true that replacing junior developers with AI will mean no more senior developers coming up, but equally, "don't worry, companies will train the next generation of developers in the hope of getting a few years of very cheap labour out of them" wasn't a particularly good system either

The problem is that those negative outcomes are serious enough that we should not be encouraging widespread gAI adoption in education; we have pastoral responsibilities to our students to stop.
Why can’t we make decisions from a space of caution rather than one of frenzied tech FOMO?
The current (very early!) literature on the cognitive effects and learning outcomes of using GenAI is mixed. There are headline negative ones but also positive ones. If one wants to appeal to the literature in this state you need to provide a thesis on why it is mixed.
