This seems right - Bari Weiss works for the Ellisons, not for Trump. In general, I think a weakness of a lot of analysis of this political movement is that it treats Trump and MAGA (and their equivalents elsewhere) as principals rather than agents. theintercept.com/2025/12/22/b...

In Icelandic folklore Jólakötturinn, the Yule Cat, comes to eat those who do not wear their new clothes for Christmas. In this image, you can see somebody did not put on their new Christmas sweater. Or perhaps even more unfortunately, no one got them one!

That there exist tiers of wealth beyond which it is literally impossible to ever make enough bad financial decisions to impoverish yourself no matter how puddingbrained you are is something we either have to eliminate or else make that the case for all people at all income levels.

Jesus, can you hear me? Good, the comms are working. Now, you're gonna need to run if you want to evade those Roman soldiers. Hold down A to sprint. Go ahead and try it. ... Good work! You just might be the savior yet. Now pick up that AR-15 and let's do some target practice.

I’ve occasionally wondered whether resources like this would be useful, & figured you’d have a bottleneck trying to rapidly+remotely access the info on smartphones which rely on restricted App Store ecosystems. This database solves that problem by letting you use a simple text msg to look up plates.

that the Whos celebrate Christmas suggests some knowledge of Christ, but whether this is our anthropic Christ or a distinctive Who-Christ remains obscure; some have argued Christianity was introduced to them during their refuge with Horton, which of course turns us to the matter of Elephant Religion

Just an observation that culture treats listening to rap as a bad influence on young black men, but does not afford nearly the same disdain for country music on young white men.

I WONDER WHY THAT IS (I don’t actually wonder)

It was hard to convince Americans torture is wrong as a moral principle during Bush's term, and that was with the debate about whether torture makes us safer. I'm afraid for a portion of Trump's base, that calculation matters less. Idea of torturing undocumented immigrants may even bring pleasure.

For my last Buying Power of the year, I wrote about one way to think about the divergence in consumer sentiment (bad) and behavior (free-spending) this year: It’s the YOLO economy, typified by the expanding popularity of services like Klarna and Affirm. Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Want to understand the state of the economy? Just look to all the shoppers flocking to “buy now, pay later” services.
