The governments in Mexico and South America have a very straightforward demand for the US to change its domestic policy to reduce violence abroad:
1 Stop selling the Guns made in the US and sold to cartels
2 Stop enormous cocaine demand that fuels cartels bsky.app/profile/ronf...

Always insane to remember that cities like NYC/Philly/Boston could improve transit practically overnight by implementing citywide BRT, and just don't.

drunk driving is extremely bad and we should try to design social patterns and travel norms in ways that reduce it
I have a bunch of intersecting thoughts here but basically 1) excessive alcohol consumption is an urban activity, 2) we shouldn’t legalize drunk driving and 3) we should more heavily penalize parents whose kids abuse alcohol in such a drastic fashion.

My point is that especially when it comes to the flu the US is not a bellwether. The way that virus transmits means we are lucky enough to get warnings from other countries first.

And because of our shitty HHS we fucked up a preventative response. We should be outraged.

I'm sharing this because sharing an NYT story about this outweighs my dislike of the publication.

We have known for months because of data outside of Japan that this year's flu season was going to be bad but we have an HHS secretary that hates vaccination and so voila.
“New York City’s syndromic surveillance system, which collects information about every patient who visits an emergency room, reported 9,857 visits for “influenza-like illness” last week. That was higher than in the worst weeks of the 2017-18 or 2024-25 flu seasons, both ranked as “high severity”
