An incredibly important thread on the history of voter suppression
Imma try and keep this short, but this is what i think is importantly historically. The 1960s civil rights laws and decisions were not technically "new legislation." it was a restoration of what already was.

For example

We need to be able to talk about the Epstein files and those implicated without resorting to antisemitic tropes and conspiracies. The conversation around abuse, greed, and corruption is vital. And we need to be intentional with the language we use or we risk falling into antisemitic traps.

for no reason whatsoever, I am bringing out my favorite 12th-century illumination today, which depicts

1) a Thracesian woman killing a Varangian Guard who tried to assault her

and

2) his comrades praising her and giving her all of his stuff for her very understandable and justifiable actions 🙏

Yesterday @governorwalz.mn.gov was telling people to go out and shop at Small Businesses and holy shit you asshole look what they're doing to your state
This is the aftermath of an ICE kidnapping a few blocks from my home in St. Paul—an hour ago. A quiet street full of broken glass and at least three wrecked cars. The target of the kidnapping was taken away by ambulance. He was on a stretcher and covered by a sheet, though a cop said he was alive.

The sad truth is that many orgs & leaders have been primed for years for this.

They've been conditioned to think:

1. Jews are more uniquely in danger than others

2. Even if others are in danger, we must protect ourselves first

3. It's okay to work with fascists if they claim to be on your side
The Trump administration is trying to divide Jews from other marginalized communities at a time of rising antisemitism and fascism, by forcing Jews to choose between supporting ICE or rejecting federal security funding. It is an unacceptable choice,. www.jta.org/2026/02/11/i...
American synagogues are being forced into a terrible choice: Collaborate with ICE or risk our own safety - Jewish Telegraphic Agency
Jewish federations should fund security so synagogues don't have to accept the federal government's conditions, a Philadelphia rabbi urges.

When a sitting representative refers to the Super Bowl halftime show as “pornography,” people should use that to reflect on how they and other representatives are simultaneously working to ban, censor, and restrict “pornography” and what that actually means

The entire purpose of the SAVE Act is to make sure trans people and married women can no longer vote. That's it.
“The SAVE Act will require voters to show proof of citizenship in order to register to vote in federal elections…”

“Only half of Americans hold a valid passport…Birth certificates are also problematic for many married women [whose] name may be different than the name on her birth certificate.”
My new piece is up and it requires your URGENT ATTENTION!

I spent a long time trying to figure out what to do with my Harry Potter books, because just dumping them in a little free library felt wrong. So I mailed them to this artist who was turning them into portraits of murdered trans women

NEW: Of all the states that voted for Harris over Trump in 2024, there's only one where a Dem governor is overseeing an ICE's 287(g) program:

Massachusetts.

Other blue states have quit, or even outright banned it. My colleague on what's happening: boltsmag.org/massachusett...

As part of a 287(g) contract between state officials and ICE, Massachusetts continues to release prisoners into deportation—even as state lawmakers look to ban other forms of ICE collaboration.

I cannot count how many unhoused folks in the French Quarter I encounter in hospital gowns or scrubs, wearing their hospital bracelets, only socks on their feet, with dirty dressings over wounds or in medical distress.

This problem is everywhere, because disabled people are disposable in the US.
During freezing temperatures in Port Arthur, Texas, a 61-year-old homeless man was found dead in his wheelchair outside a convenience store.

He was wearing a hospital gown and no shoes. Authorities say he had been released from a hospital the previous day.

This is a diseased society.

I think I said this a while ago while arguing with people who said that bots can do law / medicine.

The difficulty in practice is not simply knowing the symptoms of a clinical presentation. It is understanding that you have to ask people questions to make sure you understand what is happening.

Very annoyed at the people who decided to open the floodgates to online sports betting, it is absolutely a scourge. Great piece from Gabrielle Gurley on people spending hours a day on these predatory apps.

I say this regularly. People use performative as a substitute for 'inauthentic' and we could all just say the words we mean to say. Erving Goffman helps us to understand that we perform all of the time in real life. Life itself is often a performance of self.
People have worn out "performative." We often perform things that are real, you know. Posting is a kind of performance of one's politics. Performative doesn't actually mean "fake" or "empty," it just gets deployed that way. We actually need performance. Case in point: last night's performance.

Amongst other things, this again highlights the core point about due process. It’s bad enough to be in a “show me your papers” situation, but your precious citizen/non-citizen, “legal”/“illegal” distinctions are meaningless when you can’t prove anything to authorities because they don’t give a shit.

Reminder that the Luddites were not opposed to technology, they were opposed to technology being used by the wealthy to oppress the poor. They only went after factories where advancing technology was used as an excuse to lower workers' wages. So I'm PROUD to be called a Luddite when it comes to AI.
Amazing.
Amazing. This is the framing

Ah yes, it is authoritarian to say "I am not spending a cent here if this direction remains"
