xkcd led me to the Wikipedia page for Spiders Georg, which contains this:

Business Insider referred to Donald Trump as the "'Spiders Georg' of world leaders", as his indictments on 91 felony counts yielded the statistic that the average number of felony charges per U.S. president was two.

I strongly suspect that @zachweinersmith.bsky.social is on a quest to read everything and will get there by April or so.
Reading the Homeric Hymns and there's a passage where a woman is surprised, and the line (in translation of course) is: "she shrieked and clapped her two thighs in alarm"

It's not in a sexual context. I guess it's just a description of that thing where when you're frightened you sort of bunch up.

"He believed they were Noah's descendants" is a very odd thing to say. If you believe in Noah at all, then surely you believe that all humans are Noah's descendants.

I love that Guest et al. can write parodies that are so perfect and still seem to have genuine affection for what they’re parodying. That shows itself even more clearly in A Mighty Wind, at least to me, but maybe that’s because I myself have a lot more affection for folk than metal.
the songs are also terrible in a pitch perfect way. just the title "tonight i'm gonna rock you tonight" is very funny

Stipulated: Stephen Sondheim was a genius. But I wish he had consulted with someone who paid attention to the night sky before writing “Tonight there will be no morning star.” That’s true on a majority of nights, so it’s a lousy way to convey the specialness of this night.

This is great because it demonstrates that transphobes actually do know that gender has nothing to do with anatomy or genetics. These are gingerbread men despite having no penis or testicles, and DNA that is mostly butter.

Young Americans who aspire to be scientists should be looking for career paths outside their home country, just as aspiring scientists do in other countries that don’t adequately support science. If I were starting my career now, that’s what I’d be doing.
My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, “Science isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.”

Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?

TIL about Tolkien's best named character: tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Teleporno

Extra funny because even if you imagine he was innocent of pornography, he surely knew the Greek roots would indicate something like far-prostitute.

Teleporno is a Telerin name meaning "Silver-tall".

Current US Policy:

If you’re suspected of trafficking a small amount of drugs with no evidence, we will murder you, but if you’re convicted of trafficking an enormous amount of drugs with copious evidence, we will pardon you. Because we are currently a very stupid country.

Kelly: He runs around on stage talking about lethality and the warrior ethos.. That’s not the message that should be coming from the Secretary of Defense… He runs around on a stage like he’s a 12 year old playing army. It’s embarrassing.
